Report: Jets' Sanchez to have season-ending surgery
(Sports Network) - New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is reportedly set to undergo season-ending surgery on the torn labrum in his throwing arm.
According to NFL.com, the deposed four-year starter hopes to delay the surgery for another week or two, but knows it is inevitable and that his season is over. He would most likely face a recovery period between four and six months.
The Jets, who anointed rookie Geno Smith the starter in wake of Sanchez's injury, burned their one-time only injured reserve with designation to return tag on Sanchez, which would have allowed the former starter to return after Week 8.
Smith now becomes the unquestioned starter despite an up-and-down beginning to his career in which he has thrown eight interceptions and lost three fumbles but helped lead the Jets to a 2-2 record.
Even before he was injured in the fourth quarter of New York's third preseason game, Sanchez's status with the team beyond this season was in doubt.
He has two years remaining on his contract, but will likely be released. Between interceptions and fumbles, Sanchez combined for 52 turnovers over the last two seasons.
