NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Dallas

(Sunday, February 17th)

Final Score: Calgary 4, Dallas 3

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Steve Begin provided the game-winning goal in a big third period for the Calgary Flames in their 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center.

Roman Horak and Matt Stajan also scored in the final stanza for Calgary, which rallied from a two-goal deficit to win for the second time in three games -- the other victory also coming against Dallas.

Mike Cammalleri had a hat trick in the previous meeting and scored again on Sunday, while Joey MacDonald made 27 saves to pick up the win in his first start with Calgary.

Richard Bachman was beaten four times on 26 shots in losing to the Flames four days after yielding six goals against them. Antoine Roussel, Reilly Smith and Ryan Garbutt all scored in defeat.

"It's tough to swallow when you're going into the third period winning by two goals," Smith said. "It's very frustrating."

Calgary scored twice early in the third to knot things at 3-3, and Blake Comeau set up the go-ahead tally when he carried the puck through the entire offensive zone, behind the net then up to the blue line to create some space.

Chris Butler's shot from the point was stopped by a slew of players in front and squirted out to Begin, who got his stick loose and beat Bachman up high with 9:30 showing.

Dallas registered just four shots in the third period, and MacDonald collected the win less than a week after getting claimed off waivers from Detroit.

Early in the first period, the Flames had a short-lived two-man advantage and capitalized six seconds after the first penalty expired when Cammalleri's centering feed from the left side snuck through at the 8:11 mark.

The Stars had four shots in the first 20 minutes, then scored three times on 22 shots in the second stanza, two coming in a 56-second span. Cody Eakin's point shot was redirected by Antoine Roussel at 1:51, and Smith lifted one over a sprawled-out MacDonald after he made a pair of saves.

An odd-man rush resulted in Dallas padding its lead late in the period. Garbutt sped down the left side and dropped a pass for Stephane Robidas, whose wrister was stopped by MacDonald. The rebound bounced away from the netminder, and Garbutt was in the right place to cash in with 4:37 left.

Bachman stopped all 12 shots he faced in the second and denied Jay Bouwmeester from the left circle early in the third. The rebound, however, bounced out front and Horak snapped it into the back of the net 1:39 into the period.

Less than a minute later, from the roughly same spot as Horak's tally, Stajan took Lee Stempniak's feed from the left doorstep and tied things.

"We had a good talk after the second period," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. "I told them if we want to build some foundation to be a playoff team, it's games like this that we need to win."

Game Notes

Bachman was in net because the Stars' starting goaltender, Kari Lehtonen, suffered a groin injury in Friday's win over the Canucks and was put on injured reserve Sunday ... Calgary is 7-1-2 in its past 10 games vs. the Stars.
