NFL Game Summary - Houston at St. Louis
(Sunday, December 20th)
Final Score: Houston 16, St. Louis 13
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Kris Brown kicked three field goals, including a 28-yarder with 4:36 left in the fourth quarter, as the Houston Texans held on for a 16-13 win over the St. Louis Rams at Edward Jones Dome.
Matt Schaub completed 28-of-40 passes for 367 yards and a touchdown for Houston (7-7), which won 34-7 over Seattle last Sunday to snap a four- game slide.
"Despite records, that's a good football team we played, especially the defense side of the ball, they way they schemed things and the way they played," Schaub said. "But, we were able to get some big plays down field and we were able to execute at the end."
Andre Johnson had nine catches for 196 yards, while Kevin Walter added four grabs for 42 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Moats added 46 yards on 13 carries.
Steven Jackson rushed for 82 yards on 20 touches and pulled in four catches for 41 yards for the Rams (1-13), who suffered a 47-7 beating by Tennessee last weekend and have dropped six in a row after claiming their only win of the season, a 17-10 decision at Detroit on November 1.
Rookie Keith Null started at quarterback for the Rams and threw for 173 yards on 18-of-27 efficiency with a touchdown and an interception. Starter Marc Bulger is still suffering from a knee injury, while second stringer Kyle Boller was out with a thigh injury and swine-flu. Danny Amendola had two- yard touchdown catch.
"Very disappointed, but very, very proud," Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo said about the team's effort. "After everything we went through this week and being a little short-handed with injuries and what not, the guys were out there battling. I just asked them to play each play for each other and I thought they did that today. We fell a little bit short, so I'm disappointed in that way."
With the game tied at 13 near the midpoint of the fourth quarter, Schaub connected with Johnson on back-to-back passes of 30 and 44 yards, respectively that got the Texans to the St. Louis 12 yard-line. However, the drive fizzled and Houston had to settle for Kris Brown's field goal with 4:36 left.
The Rams then went three-and-out on their ensuing drive and elected to punt with 2:39 to play and never got the ball back. Houston picked up a first down prior to the two-minute warning and Schaub took a knee to kill off the remaining time.
Each team had good drives going on their initial offensive sets, but both ended in fumbles. Null and Jackson couldn't get together on the handoff exchange and coughed up the ball on the Texans 43 which led to a Kris Brown 27-yard field goal with 3 1/2 minutes left in the opening quarter.
St. Louis got on the board with 7:25 left in the half when Josh Brown converted a 33-yard field goal.
Kris Brown answered with a 25-yard chip shot on the Texans next possession after their drive stalled inside the red zone and were up 6-3 with 4:20 to play in the second.
Amendola's 55-yard return on the ensuing kickoff, coupled with a 15-yard facemask penalty, moved the ball to the Houston 25. Then facing a 3rd-and-goal from the two later in the drive, Null hit Amendola in the end zone for a 10-6 Rams lead with 1:47 remaining. Kris Brown's 52-yard effort hit the right upright as time expired.
A Schaub-to-Walter three yard touchdown with 5:15 left in the third quarter, finished off an 83-yard, 10-play drive that put Houston in front 13-10, but Josh Brown split the uprights from 52 yards out on the Rams next series to even things.
Houston will play at Miami next Sunday, while St. Louis visits Arizona...St. Louis was a 33-27 overtime winner in its only previous meeting with the Texans, a come-from-behind affair at Reliant Stadium in 2005.
