Giants S Brown has torn ACL

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - New York Giants safety Stevie Brown suffered a torn ACL to his left knee during Saturday night's 24-21 preseason overtime loss to the New York Jets.

Coach Tom Coughlin confirmed the severity of the injury during his conference call on Sunday.

New York's starting safety sustained the season-ending injury after picking off Jets quarterback Geno Smith in the first quarter. His knee buckled without contact during the return and was unable to put any weight on it while on his way to the locker room.

New York originally called it a sprained knee during the game, but tests on Sunday confirmed the true extent of the injury. As a result, the Giants placed him on season-ending injured reserve.

Brown enjoyed his best NFL season in 2012 while playing for his third team in as many years. He made 11 starts for the Giants and had a team-leading eight interceptions, which was tied for the second highest total in all the NFL last season.

The Giants also announced the release of 14 players on Sunday, with linebacker Aaron Curry headlining the group. Curry was a former fourth overall pick of the Seattle Seahawks back in 2009.

Other cuts were linebackers Jake Muasau and Etienne Sabino, fullback Ben Guidugli, wide receivers Brandon Collins and Terrence Sinkfield, tight ends Jamie Childers and Chase Clement, offensive linemen Michael Jasper and Austin Holtz, defensive tackle Frank Okam and defensive backs Laron Scott, Junior Mertile and Alonzo Tweedy.
