| NOTES: |
|
Six races remain after an open week on the 2011 Nationwide Series docket,
as Ricky Stenhouse Jr and company head into Delaware to tackle the "Monster
Mile" at Dover International Speedway.
Fresh off his third straight top-10 finish, Stenhouse Jr owns a slim, 14-point
lead over Elliott Sadler. Sadler has steadily gained ground on Stenhouse Jr, as
he has recorded seven consecutive finishes inside the top-10. Despite his
success, Sadler is winless in 28 starts. Both drivers have totaled 20 top-10's
this year.
Reed Sorenson might be on the outside looking in heading into Dover. Sorenson,
who stands in third place, 47 points behind Stenhouse, has six top fives and
nine top 10s in 10 career starts at DIS.
Last season, Kyle Busch set another NASCAR record by claiming his 11th
Nationwide Series win of the season with a near flawless performance at Dover.
Busch, who finished the 2010 season with 13 wins, led all but eight of the 200
laps. Busch will not be on hand to defend his title, as he concentrates on the
Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.
Starting 16th on the grid, Clint Bowyer worked his way to the front and
took control on lap 118 and held on the rest of the way to post his eighth
career Nationwide Series title in 2009. Bowyer led the final 83 laps to post a
1.319 seconds win over Mike Bliss.
Kyle Busch dominated the 2008 running of the fall Dover race, as he led for
157 of the 207 laps en route to his 19th career Nationwide Series title. Busch,
who started on the pole, defeated Mike Bliss by 0.866 of a second.
In 2007, Denny Hamlin won for the fifth time in his Nationwide Series career.
Hamlin, who started fourth on the grid, led five times for 138 laps, as he
defeated Martin Truex Jr by just under two seconds. Hamlin reclaimed the
advantage from Truex with just 15 laps remaining for a 1.797 seconds victory.
Pole sitter Greg Biffle finished ninth.
Bowyer claimed the lead on lap 179 of the 202-lap race in 2006 and held on for
his fifth career Nationwide Series title. Bowyer, who started 16th on the
grid, held off Matt Kenseth by just 0.547 of a second. Pole sitter Scott
Riggs, who led for the first 40 laps, finished 12th, while Martin Truex
Jr., who led for a race-high 77 laps, failed to finish and placed 30th.
In 2005, Ryan Newman won his fourth consecutive start, as he took the
checkered flag, 1.343 seconds ahead of Bowyer. Newman, who posted his fifth
Nationwide Series title, led for a track record 193 laps and tied the
consecutive win mark set in 1983 by Sam Ard. Newman started on the pole and
led for the first 94 laps and then regained the lead on lap 101. Kenny Wallace
took over the top spot on lap 123, but it was short-lived, as Newman was back
on top on lap 124 and led the rest of the way.
The pole sitter has won this race only three times in the history of the
September Dover races. Morgan Shepherd captured the inaugural race, Ryan
Newman won in 2005 and 2008 by Busch. Overall, there have been six pole
winners in the previous 55 Dover Nationwide races, including Carl Edwards
earlier this year.
Harry Gant, a five-time pole winner at Dover, is the only driver to win this
race in back-to-back seasons (1990-91). Gant, Bowyer, Busch and Matt Kenseth
are the only two-time winners of this race. Todd Bodine and Busch are three-
time winners of Nationwide Series races in Dover.
Michael Annett will make his 100th series start Saturday at Dover. The former
hockey player-turned NASCAR driver made his series debut at Homestead-Miami in
2008. He's currently 10th in the points and has six top-10 finishes. Coming
into this season, he'd had a career total of six top 10s.
The next Nationwide Series race is the October 8 Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas
Speedway. Joey Logano is the defending champion.
