Description: Oakland has claimed left-hander Jeff Francis off waivers. SOURCE: John Hickey, Oakland Tribune
Insight: He'll give the Athletics some depth but not much else. Francis has been bouncing from team to team the past few seasons and hasn't enjoyed a successful fantasy campaign since 2007 when he won a career-high 17 games for the Rockies.
1/13/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati inked a minor league deal with lefthander Jeff Francis on Monday. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: Francis didn't do much in Colorado last season (3-5, 6.27 ERA in 23 appearances). He's unlikely to crack the Reds' starting rotation in 2014.
8/7/2013 7:24:00 PM
Description: Lefthander Jeff Francis will be taking Carlos Gonzalez's spot on the active roster.
Insight: The Rockies have no plans to use him in the starting rotation so it looks like Francis will have to settle for a mop-up/long relief role. Obviously, he won't be of any use to fantasy owners in this capacity.
Cold6/19/2013 8:06:00 PM
Description: Jeff Francis just pitched himself right out of the Rockies' starting rotation.
Insight: According to the Denver Post, the Rockies are sending him down to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Francis' last outing was a disaster. In six innings Tuesday against Toronto, the lefthander allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs. His locker has already been cleared out.
5/29/2013 12:02:00 PM
Description: Colorado starter Jeff Francis (groin) threw a bullpen session and should move to the next step - an extended spring training game.
Insight: Francis wasn't very good in his eight starts (2-3, 6.00 ERA, 1.583 WHIP) and there is no guarantee a spot will be waiting for him when he's finally healthy. His last winning season was 2007 when he went 17-9.
6/21/2012 10:16:00 PM
Description: Colorado starter Jeff Francis held Philadelphia to one run on six hits in five innings. He walked none and struck out three in a no decision.
Insight: Francis was bombed in his first start back in the major leagues and he gave up four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 his last time out. Thursday is likely the best it is going to get for the lefty this season.
6/9/2012 10:31:00 PM
Description: Colorado starter Jeff Francis got clobbered in his return to major league action Saturday against the Angels. He let in eight runs on 10 hits in just 3.1 innings of work.
Insight: It could be a pretty quick stay in the majors for Francis if he keeps pitching likes this.
6/8/2012 1:40:00 PM
Description: Newly acquired starter Jeff Francis will be the Rockies starting pitcher on Saturday versus the Angels.
Insight: Francis went 3-6 with a 3.72 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Louisville before opting out of his deal with Cincinnati. In his seven years in the majors, he's never had an ERA under 4.16 or a WHIP below 1.286. He's probably not going to give you much if you claim him off waivers.
6/4/2012 9:45:00 PM
Description: Jeff Francis has opted out of his deal with the Reds and is now a free agent. Francis' old team the Rockies appear to be one of the teams interested in his services.
Insight: Francis went 3-6 with a 3.72 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Louisville before opting out of his deal. The 31-year-old lefthander last appeared in the majors in 2011 with the Royals when he went 6-16 with a 4.82 ERA. Even if Francis can somehow squeeze his way back onto a big league roster, the odds that he becomes a useful fantasy player again any time soon are pretty slim.
4/1/2012 7:41:00 PM
Description: Jeff Francis has been sent down to Triple-A Louisville.
Insight: Francis had a pretty bumpy spring (1-2, 6.65 ERA) and the Reds' rotation is pretty crowded so we're not surprised Francis didn't make the team. Francis was just 6-16 for Kansas City in 2011 (4.82 ERA) so it's debatable how much the 31-year-old had left in the tank anyway. Francis's only really solid year for fantasy was 2007, when he went 17-9 with a 4.22 ERA and 165 strikeouts.
5/21/2011 10:08:00 AM
Description: Jeff Francis picked up his first win of the 2011 season on Friday by throwing 7 2/3 innings of shut out baseball while fanning 6 cards.
Insight: I'm often times very tough of the Royals pitchers but I actually like Francis more than any of them and is actually worth a look in AL only leagues.
4/2/2011 5:53:00 AM
Description: Jeff Francis allowed just one run over seven innings last night but didn't factor into the decision against the Angels.
Insight: Kansas City won the game after he departed. Francis usually starts the season better than he finishes it so this is the time for AL-only owners to give him a shot in favorable matchups.
3/23/2011 5:56:00 AM
Description: Jeff Francis took the loss yesterday after allowing six runs in five innings.
Insight: Two positives on Francis. First, he struck out seven batters yesterday. Second, he has a 4.20 ERA this spring even after a poor performance. He is worth a spot in all AL-Only leagues.
1/25/2011 10:01:00 AM
Description: Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports Francis could earn as much as $4 million in his one-year deal with the Royals.
Insight: Francis' base salary is $2 million, with $2 million more possible in incentives. He has not made 30 starts in a season since 2007. (
1/14/2011 10:59:00 AM
Description: Free-agent pitcher Jeff Francis has reached agreement on a one-year, guaranteed deal with the Kansas City Royals, pending completion of a physical exam. SOURCE:
Insight: Francis struggled in his return from shoulder issues last season. Assuming he wins a spot in the Royals rotation, he is an AL-only league spot starter, at best, until he proves he can pitch in the American League.
1/14/2011 10:05:00 AM
Description:'s Jerry Crasnick reports the Royals will sign Francis to a one-year deal.
Insight: Francis pitched 104.1 innings for the Rockies in 2010 after missing the entire 2009 season recovering from shoulder surgery. (
1/5/2011 5:29:00 PM
Description: Jeff Francis has drawn interest from seven teams. SOURCE: JERRY CRASNICK
Insight: We expect him to start the 2011 season in someone's rotation. He will not be a good option in mixed leagues and is a poor bet to stay healthy. AL or NL league owners will consider taking a chance on him.
11/16/2010 6:05:00 PM
Description: Some teams have expressed early interest in P Jeff Francis, including Pittsburgh, Seattle, Colorado, Milwaukee & Houston. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick via Twitter
Insight: The best fit of that group could be Seattle, with its spacious outfield. Francis was solid for the Rockies and would be a solid guy at the back end of a rotation, if he is healthy.
9/29/2010 2:01:00 AM
Description: Francis allowed four runs over six innings on Tuesday against the Dodgers. He walked none and struck out one.
Insight: Francis did not factor into the decision but he remains at 4-6 with a 4.93 ERA in 19 starts this year. (
9/14/2010 8:04:00 AM
Description: Francis allowed two runs on five hits over only three innings on Monday against the Padres. He walked none and struck out two.
Insight: Francis fell to 4-5 on the year with a 4.61 ERA. (
