Description: Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller makes his first start in July today against the Marlins after an absolutely dreadful June.
Insight: Miller (7-7, 4.10 ERA) delivered two quality starts out of six last month as carries a dreadful 8.16 ERA and 2.16 WHIP over his last three outings into this afternoon's game at Busch Stadium. Given the Marlins' hot hitting of late, he's not the best play right now.

6/25/2014 4:02:00 PM
Description: According to Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny expects Shelby Miller (back) to make his next start.
Insight: Miller (7-6, 3.75 ERA) walked five and allowed three runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings before exiting with back pain Tuesday at Colorado. The right-hander has gotten his HR/9 in check after allowing seven in April, but he still has a mediocre 6.34 K/9 and a terrible 4.42 BB/9.

Description: St. Louis starter Shelby Miller had to leave Tuesday's game because of back tightness. SOURCE: Cardinals on Twitter
Insight: He came out after getting blasted for three runs and six hits in only 2 2/3 innings. Miller (7-6, 3.75 ERA) also allowed five walks. Consider him questionable for his next start Sunday against Los Angeles.

6/14/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller worked around four walks to allow one run over 6 2/3 innings Saturday against the Nationals.
Insight: Miller has been walking the tightrope all season; he's posted a 60/38 K/BB in 84 1/3 innings but has a 3.42 ERA. The right-hander has allowed just three homers in his last 50 innings after serving up seven taters in his first 34 1/3.

6/7/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller hurled his second career shutout Saturday afternoon against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Miller (7-5, 3.59 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) held one of the best offenses in baseball to three hits in his nine innings of work after allowing 15 earned runs in his previous 17 innings. The 23-year-old has walked just seven batters and allowed only two homers in his last 33 innings after issuing 27 free passes and serving up eight home runs in his first 44 2/3.

5/17/2014 5:12:00 PM
Description: Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller threw his best start of 2014 Saturday afternoon against the Braves.
Insight: Miller gave up five hits and one unearned run while striking out seven and walking two in seven innings. Miller has a 2.79 ERA this season, but his FIP is 5.35 due to a 6.97 K/9, a 5.05 BB/9 and a 1.39 HR/9. The right-hander has the tools to be better than that, but there's going to be some hard regression if he keeps putting so many men on base and allowing so many home runs.

4/30/2014 9:02:00 PM
Description: Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller gave up three runs in six innings to beat the Brewers on Wednesday, but he also gave up two homers, walked three and had just one strikeout.
Insight: Miller has a 3.15 ERA this season, but he's walked 5.50 batters per nine innings and struck out just 6.82. He had an 8.78 K/9 and a 2.96 BB/9 last year. The right-hander's 6.18 FIP suggests he's been very fortunate so far and may soon implode if he doesn't get his walks and homers in check.

4/16/2014 9:43:00 AM
Description: Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller had his best start of the season Tuesday at Milwaukee.
Insight: Miller allowed three hits and one earned run while fanning seven batters in six innings. He came into the game with a 6.35 ERA.

8/24/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Cardinals righthander Shelby Miller was dominant Saturday in a win against the Braves.
Insight: The only run he allowed came on a solo shot by Freddie Freeman in the first inning. Miller improved to 12-8 with the victory. Saturday was also the righthander's 10th quality start of the season.

8/15/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: In his first start since taking a line drive off his pitching elbow, Cardinals righty Shelby Miller threw six innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits against the Pirates Wednesday night.
Insight: Miller only threw two pitches last Wednesday before being struck by a Carl Crawford liner. He had some extra time to rest and while he didn't have his best results Wednesday against Pittsburgh, he appeared to be healthy.

8/12/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller, who took a line drive off his pitching elbow in his last start, will taking his regular spot in the rotation on Wednesday against Pittsburgh, according to manager Mike Matheny.
Insight: Miller exited last Wednesday's game after a line drive off his right elbow on his second pitch of the game. He's been an excellent fantasy option this season with an 11-7 record, 2.89 ERA. 1.137 WHIP and 132 strikeouts in just 121 1/3 IP.

8/8/2013 6:10:00 PM
Description: Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller said Thursday that he doesn't expect to miss a start, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Insight: Miller exited Wednesday's game after taking a line drive off his right elbow on his second pitch of the game. The Cardinals rotation is in limbo after Thursday's scheduled starter Jake Westbrook was forced into action Wednesday, so even if Miller makes his next start it might not come until a week from now. St. Louis will go with Carlos Martinez Thursday, Lance Lynn Friday, Michael Wacha Saturday, Joe Kelly Sunday and presumably Adam Wainwright Tuesday.

8/7/2013 9:18:00 PM
Description: The Cardinals announced that Shelby Miller has a right elbow contusion, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.
Insight: That just means Miller has a bruise, which was to be expected when he left Wednesday's start after getting drilled with a line drive by Carl Crawford. The right-hander has gone 11-7 with a 2.89 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 132 K in 121 1/3 innings this season and losing him would be a huge blow to the Cardinals and to fantasy owners, but it appears he has avoided a serious injury.

8/7/2013 8:35:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Shelby Miller left Wednesday's start against the Dodgers in the first inning after he was hit in the right elbow by a Carl Crawford line drive.
Insight: Miller threw just two pitches in the game. The right-hander has gone 11-7 with a 2.89 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 132 K in 121 1/3 innings this season and losing him would be a huge blow to the Cardinals and to fantasy owners.

7/4/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: In his first start since allowing six hits and five runs over 1 2/3 innings on June 28 at Oakland, Cardinals starter Shelby Miller held the Angels to two runs on five hits and struck out six over six innings to improve to 9-6 Wednesday night.
Insight: Miller worked out a mechanical flaw that was causing his fastball, which has been one of the most valuablr fastballs in the league this season at 9.2 runs above average, to be flat over his last couple of starts.

7/1/2013 12:50:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Shelby Miller threw an extended bullpen session Sunday to try to regain his fastball command, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Insight: Miller allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings Friday. "I looked back at the video again and the ball was running, it just was a straight four-seam (fastball) with no life," Miller said. "I’m just pushing it." Miller worked on his mechanics during the session Sunday and thinks he figured out what was wrong. Miller will make his next start Wednesday against the Angels.

Hot6/18/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Cardinals starter Shelby Miller had to exit Monday's start with a right leg cramp.
Insight: Trainers checked him out in the fifth inning, but he was able to finish out the frame before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the fifth. Miller had a two-hit shutout going at the time of his injury and still earned his eighth win. He should be able to make his next start.

Hot6/12/2013 9:47:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Shelby Miller struck out 10 in six innings Wednesday against the Mets, but he allowed two homers and four runs in a loss.

Insight: Miller didn't walk a batter and has a 51/11 K/BB in 45 2/3 innings. The right-hander is 5-2 with a 1.58 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP and has lived up to his billing as a top prospect despite a down year at Triple-A in 2012.
