Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Tyler Lyons pitched seven solid frames as
the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals, 4-1, in the second
and final game of a two-game set.
Making just his second career start, Lyons (2-0) allowed one run on two hits
and a walk while fanning five.
The 25-year-old lefty made his debut on May 22 against the Padres and gave up
one run on four hits and a walk in seven innings.
"Lyons is just pitching good for us right now," said Carlos Beltran. "After
missing (Jaime) Garcia in the rotation, they go into the minor league system
and find another lefty and he's doing the job for us."
Edward Mujica threw a flawless ninth to notch his 16th save.
Beltran had a two-run home run while Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday each hit
a solo shot for the Cardinals, who have won six of their last seven games.
Billy Butler drove in the lone run for the Royals, who are on a seven-game
losing streak. Starter Ervin Santana (3-5), in his fifth attempt to record his
100th career win, surrendered all four runs on seven hits and two walks in 7
"What are you asking me to do," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "Take my belt
off and spank them? Yell at them? Scream at them? What do you want? I mean,
these kids, every day we go through the process. All right? We're talking
constantly about approach."
Carpenter started the game with a single, setting up Beltran's two-run blast.
The Royals responded in the home half. Alex Gordon walked to lead off and
scored on a double by Butler.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the sixth. Carpenter homered to lead off
and Holliday followed suit two batters later.
Meanwhile, Kansas City mustered just one other hit, a one-out single by Butler
in the seventh. Trevor Rosenthal was perfect in the eighth and Mujica threw a
1-2-3 ninth to end the game.
Butler became the ninth player in franchise history to record 1,000 hits ...
St. Louis third baseman David Freese went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak
to eight games... The Cardinals are 8-0-1 in their last nine series ... St.
Louis and Kansas City will play each other again on Wednesday and Thursday at
