O's 3B Machado has suspension appeal denied

New York, NY ( - Major League Baseball has upheld a five- game suspension to Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado for a bat- tossing incident earlier this month.

The Orioles announced that Machado will begin serving the penalty during Monday's game against the Texas Rangers. He will be eligible to return to the team when Baltimore visits the Boston Red Sox this coming Saturday.

Machado flung his bat down the third-base line as he swung and missed on a pitch from Oakland reliever Fernando Abad in a game against the Athletics back on June 8. The act caused both benches to clear and resulted in ejections for both Machado and Abad, who nearly hit the Orioles' young standout with his previous pitch.

Two days earlier, Machado reacted angrily at the A's Josh Donaldson for what he perceived to be an unnecessarily forceful tag that the third baseman applied to him on a force play. That prompted Baltimore pitcher Wei-Yin Chin to hit Donaldson with a pitch later in that contest.

Machado, a 2013 All-Star and the American League's Gold Glove Award winner at third base last season, is hitting .239 with seven home runs and 17 RBI through 54 games this year. The 21-year-old missed the first month of this season while recovering from knee surgery.
