Red Sox place Middlebrooks, Victorino on DL

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox placed third baseman Will Middlebrooks and outfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Middlebrooks exited Thursday's 12-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians in the fifth inning with lower back spasms.

The 24-year-old infielder was batting .201 with eight home runs and 21 runs batted in through 46 games this season, his second in the majors.

The move for Victorino is retroactive to May 21, one day after the 32-year-old outfielder experienced tightness in his left hamstring in the sixth inning of Monday's loss to the White Sox.

Victorino was batting .283 with two homers and 10 RBI prior to the injury.

To replace Middlebrooks and Victorino on the roster, the Red Sox recalled pitcher Alfredo Aceves and infielder Jose Iglesias from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Both Aceves and Iglesias are rejoining the Red Sox for their second stints of the season.

Aceves went 1-1 with an 8.66 earned run average in five games (three starts), while Iglesias made his first career Opening Day roster with the Red Sox and hit .450 with two doubles and one RBI over six games.

Also on Friday, Boston activated catcher David Ross from the seven-day concussion disabled list.

Ross took a pair of foul balls off his mask on May 11 against Toronto and experienced concussion symptoms. In 15 games this season, Ross was hitting .209 with four homers and five RBI.

To make room for Ross, the Red Sox optioned catcher Ryan Lavarnway to Pawtucket after Thursday's game.
