(Saturday, September 22)
Final Score: Wake Forest 49, Army 37
Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Josh Harris and Deandre Martin both
rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns apiece, as the Wake
Forest Demon Deacons claimed a 49-37 win over Army at BB&T Field.
Michael Campanaro ran for a touchdown to go along with a game-high 12 catches
for 153 yards and two TDs receiving for the Demon Deacons (3-1), who were
coming off a 52-0 loss at Florida State a week ago. Tanner Price completed 15-
of-24 passes for 221 yards in the win.
The Black Knights (0-3) remain winless on the season despite a game-high 140
rushing yards from Raymond Maples and another 112 yards and a TD from Larry
Dixon. Quarterback Trent Steelman scored three times on the ground and added a
passing TD.
The first five drives of the game produced five touchdowns.
Army marched right down the field on the game's opening possession, and
Steelman capped the 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. However, the
extra-point attempt was blocked.
Wake Forest answered with a long touchdown drive of its own, as Campanaro
scored on a four-yard run to give the Demon Deacons a 7-6 lead midway through
the opening frame.
The seesaw battle continued on the ensuing possession, as Dixon responded with
a 12-yard touchdown run to put Army back on top.
The Demon Deacons capped the first-quarter scoring with a 41-yard scoring
strike from Price to Campanaro.
Army struck first in the second quarter, as Steelman polished off an 11-play,
73-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge with 11:41 remaining in the
half.
The scoring would settle down until the 4:29 mark of the second quarter, when
Price found Campanaro for another touchdown, this time from seven yards.
Army kicker Dan Grochowski made a 21-yard field goal as time expired in the
first half, sending the Black Knights into the locker room with a 23-21
advantage at intermission.
Wake Forest drew first blood in the third quarter, as Harris eluded several
defenders on a nifty 19-yard touchdown run at the 12:05 mark. Less than two
minutes later, the Demon Deacons pushed their lead to 35-23 on Martin's 10-
yard TD scamper, which was set up by a fumble recovery deep in Army territory.
However, Army would not go away. Steelman responded by leading his team on a
nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive, which he capped with a two-yard touchdown
run.
But on the ensuing possession, Harris found the end zone again for Wake
Forest, this time on a 63-yard burst to put the Demon Deacons on top, 42-30.
Army trimmed the deficit to 42-37 at the 2:07 mark of the third quarter on
Steelman's 13-yard scoring strike to Raymond Maples, following a nine-play,
75-yard drive.
The score would remain that way until the 2:50 mark of the fourth quarter,
when Martin broke free for a 37-yard touchdown scamper to put the Demon
Deacons on top, 49-37.
The teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense. Harris (129
rushing yards) and Martin (115) became the first Demon Deacon teammates to
eclipse 100 rushing yards in the same game since 2005.
