GAME NOTES: Coming off their first conference loss in more than a calendar
year, the Davidson Wildcats look to rebound this evening when they take on the
UNC Greensboro Spartans.
Davidson suffered an 87-85 overtime loss on its home floor to Elon two nights
ago, which snapped the team's 16-game conference winning streak. The Wildcats
have been streaky this season, having strung together three or more wins twice
and also three or more losses twice.
UNCG is off to its best league start and sits above .500 in January for the
first time since the 2007-08 season. The Spartans are seeking a fourth
consecutive victory after beating The Citadel in overtime Thursday night,
Davidson has won the last two head-to-head meetings and leads the all-time
series with UNCG, 22-9.
The Wildcats appeared well on their way to another victory on Thursday as they
led Elon by 14 points with less than five minutes to play in overtime.
However, the Phoenix closed regulation with a 16-2 run and forced overtime on
a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. Davidson shot just 4-of-11 from the
field in the extra session and failed to get to the free-throw line. The loss
spoiled another double-double from De'Mon Brooks, who tied a career-high with
28 points to go along with 10 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Tom
Droney (15), Tyler Kalinoski (13) and Brian Sullivan (12). Brooks, the
preseason SoCon Player of the Year, has really picked up his play of late,
averaging 23.3 ppg and 9.3 rpg while shooting 64 percent from the floor during
UNCG is led by junior forward Kyle Cain, who is averaging 15.7 ppg and 9.1 rpg
and has scored in double figures in all but two games this season. He piled up
20 points and 16 rebounds in the win over Citadel for his league-best seventh
double-double of the season. Sophomore Kayel Locke led all scorers with 21
points in Thursday's victory, and he came up with a big bucket with 3.7 ticks
on the clock to force overtime, where the Spartans eventually prevailed. Locke
has reached double figures in 11 of his last 12 outings and is second on the
team in scoring with 12.7 ppg. Freshman Tevon Saddler is also averaging double
figures with 11.9 ppg.
Given the Wildcats' inconsistent play throughout the season's first few
months, it is hardly surprising that their SoCon win streak came to a crashing
halt. They won't catch a break here playing on the road against a UNCG squad
that is on a roll of late.
