GAME NOTES: The Weber State Wildcats get back on the hardwood Saturday in a
Big Sky Conference tilt against the struggling Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
Weber State has had a week off since dropping North Dakota, 72-60, for its
first road win of the season. Jordan Richardson logged 16 points to lead the
way, while Jeremy Senglin tallied 15 points for the Wildcats, who have been
victorious in four of their last five. Davion Berry and Byron Fulton added 12
and 10 points, respectively, and Joel Bolomboy grabbed 10 rebounds to make up
for a 1-of-8 shooting effort.
The Wildcats shot 42.9 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-
of-11 from beyond the arc, and cruised to the finish line.
Berry averages a team-best 15.7 ppg, while Senglin and Kyle Tresnak check in
with 11.8 and 11.3 ppg, respectively, to pace an offense that puts up nearly
72 ppg but has a -1.42 turnover margin. The team is shooting a healthy 46.5
percent from the floor on the season and holding opponents to 41.0 percent,
which ranks first in the conference.
That kind of defensive pressure is exactly what the Thunderbirds don't want to
see, as they have topped the 60-point mark just once since a season-opening
win over Arizona Christian. That victory on Nov. 8 in fact, is the only
one so far for a Southern Utah squad that is mired in a 13-game skid.
The latest loss came on Thursday in a 60-45 decision against Idaho State, with
only Trey Kennedy (11 points) scoring in double figures. The team shot just
35.6 percent from the floor and committed 12 turnovers.
On the season, SUU has been flat out terrible on the offensive end of the
court, as it ranks last among all NCAA Division I teams in both field-goal
percentage (.354) and scoring (53.6 ppg). Pair that with a porous defense
(76.1 ppg) and the squad has very little to cling to on any given night.
Kennedy is barely breaking double figures with 10.1 ppg, while A.J. Hess sits
second on the club at 7.9 ppg.
The Wildcats have won the last seven meetings and own a 17-2 lead in games
played in Ogden. Everything suggests both those trends will continue on
