GAME NOTES: With just one win in their last five games, the Sacramento State
Hornets will look to turn things around as they host the Eastern Washington
Eagles in Big Sky Conference action at The Nest.
The Eagles are looking to do the same - turn their season, especially their
recent outings, around. Eastern Washington has won just two games in its last
nine contests, with a loss to Northern Arizona, 84-65, on Thursday.
Sacramento State has yet to string multiple wins together this season. The
Hornets are coming off a 68-64 overtime loss to conference foe Portland State
Eastern Washington has a strong hold on the all-time series against Sacramento
State, 26-12. The two teams will meet once more down the road this season on
For the first 15 minutes of Eastern Washington's game against Northern
Arizona, the two squads took turns exchanging the lead. But as soon as the
Eagles went cold on their shooting touch, the Lumberjacks took advantage,
running to victory in Big Sky play. Tyler Harvey netted a team-high 25 points
in the losing effort, while Venky Jois scored 14 points and grabbed a team-
high 15 rebounds for the double-double. Parker Kelly added 11 points, but shot
just 1-of-9 from 3-point range for Eastern Washington.
Harvey continues to be one of the top scorers in the conference, putting up
20.6 ppg on 46.2 percent shooting from the floor. The Eagles' leading scorer
also connects on 44.7 percent from 3-point distance. Jois nets 13 ppg, and
leads the squad with 8.6 rpg. Drew Brandon posts a team-high 5.2 apg and a
third-best 10.8 ppg for the Eagles.
Neither Sacramento State nor Portland State gained a lead greater than eight
points in their overtime clash Thursday night. The Hornets, in a way, buried
themselves by shooting 0-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc in the contest.
Portland State was able to outscore the Hornets, 13-9, in the extra period for
a win. Mikh McKinney registered a team-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from
the floor. Eric Stuteville added 11 points and Jordan Salley contributed 10
off the bench in the loss.
McKinney leads the Hornets in scoring this season with a 14.1 ppg average on
45.9 percent shooting from the field. McKinney also tops the team in assists
per contest with a 3.4 apg average. Dylan Garrity nets 12.2 ppg behind
McKinney, and Cody Demps leads the squad with 4.1 rpg. The Hornets score 64.4
ppg and allow 67.3 ppg to the opposition.
Although Eastern Washington hasn't won a road game yet this season, this
should be the perfect opportunity to get a Big Sky win against a Sacramento
State team that hasn't won at home since Dec. 29.
