GAME NOTES: The Saint Joseph's Hawks aim for their fourth consecutive victory
when they take on the Rhode Island Rams in Atlantic 10 play from Hagan Arena.
The Hawks ran out to a huge lead before disposing of Big Five rival Penn,
85-68, on Saturday. Langston Galloway had a game-high 20 points for the Hawks,
who have won eight of their last nine games. DeAndre' Bembry scored 13 points,
as did Chris Wilson, who also had a team-high five assists. Ronald Roberts Jr.
added 10 points and Halil Kanacevic nearly recorded a triple-double by posting
nine points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists. Kanacevic had seven more rebounds
than the Quakers starting unit combined.
Head coach Phil Martelli is hopeful the Hawks can have the same early energy
they displayed against Penn. Saint Joseph's nailed 13-of-15 shots from beyond
the arc in the first half to claim a 57-23 lead at halftime. Roberts returned
to action after sitting out two contests with back spasms and sophomore Isaiah
Miles also came back following a three-game absence due to a concussion.
Galloway (17.9 ppg) is only two 3-pointers shy of the Hawks' all-time leader
Pat Carroll (294). He ranks in the top-10 in 3-point percentage. Roberts (14.3
ppg, 7.2 rpg) is shooting 56.8 percent from the field. Bembry (11.2 ppg),
Kanacevic (10.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg) and Wilson (10.0 ppg) round out a potent
starting five for a team that averages 74.2 points. The downfall for the Hawks
is their free-throw shooting. They are last in the conference at 64.6 percent.
The Rams are coming off a 71-69 overtime home win over George Mason Saturday.
Gilvydas Biruta made two free throws with 0.7 seconds left in the extra
session. Biruta finished with a double-double consisting of 17 points and 10
rebounds for the Rams as they snapped a three-game slide. Xavier Munford shot
4-of-9 behind the 3-point line as he tallied a game-high 28 points, followed
by E.C. Matthews with 14 points for the hosts. The Rams moved to 8-0 this
year when scoring at least 70 points.
Munford (16.3 ppg), Matthews (11.8 ppg) and Biruta (10.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg) lead
the way for the Rams, who at 67 ppg, have the lowest-scoring offense in the
A-10. URI (.426) has the third-worst field-goal percentage in the conference.
Junior guard T.J. Buchanan, who earned his first start of the season in the
last game, is averaging a career-best 5.9 ppg.
The Hawks walloped URI, 81-44, in the lone meeting last season. Saint Joseph's
leads the all-time series, 50-26, and has captured two in a row versus the
Rams after ending a three-game series skid. Expect a big game from Galloway,
who is making an Atlantic-10-best 47.9 percent from 3-point range. Rhode
Island is 15-30 all-time at Hawk Hill.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Saint Joseph's 75, Rhode Island 65
