GAME NOTES: The Morehead State Eagles hope to keep their strong start to Ohio
Valley Conference play going when they host Tennessee Martin on Saturday.
Morehead State, which has won the last eight meetings against UT-Martin,
rolled to an 80-67 victory over SE Missouri State on Thursday. Brent Arrington
scored 20 points and dished out five assists, while Drew Kelly scored 16
points for the Eagles, who also received a 14-point effort from Angelo Warner.
MSU held a 38-31 rebounding edge and a 26-11 advantage at the free-throw line.
The Eagles have won three of their first four games in league play, in part
because they rank third in the OVC in scoring (78.8 ppg). They are also the
conference's best team on the glass (40.5 rpg). Chad Posthumus (10.7 ppg, 12.4
rpg) has powered the efforts on the boards, leading the conference in
rebounds, while providing solid scoring in the frontcourt. Warner (17.1 ppg,
3.4 apg) and Brent Arrington (11.8 ppg) are the more utilized scorers, and
Kareem Storey (7.3 ppg, 5.9 apg) leads the league in assists.
Tennessee-Martin ended a six-game losing streak on Monday with a 100-81
rout of two-win Tennessee State. The win was just the sixth of the season for
the Skyhawks, who sit at the bottom of the West Division.
Still, the team can be happy with its most recent showing, as Myles Taylor
scored 25 points, shooting 10-of-12 from the floor, to lead six double digit
scorers. Terence Smith tallied 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Dee
Oldham added 15 points and four steals, while Mike Liabo and Justin Childs
accounted for 13 and 10 points, respectively. Marshun Newell logged a double-
double consisting of 11 points and a game-high 10 assists as well.
UT-Martin shot an impressive 63.3 percent from the floor in the second half to
run away with the 19-point home win.
The Skyhawks' defense however, leaves a lot to be desired, as they are
allowing 80.2 ppg and 51.6 percent shooting, while ranking dead last in the
OVC in field goal percentage (.406). They do a better job of spreading the
wealth than the Tigers, with Taylor (16.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg) serving as the top
scorer among four players averaging in double figures. Smith (14.5 ppg), Liabo
(12.2 ppg) and Newell (11.4 ppg) also chime in, but Liabo is the only one of
that trio shooting better than 40 percent from the floor.
Saturday's meeting should be one-sided in favor of the Eagles, who should
notched their ninth straight win over the overmatched Skyhawks.
