GAME NOTES: The Virginia Commonwealth Rams try to remain unbeaten at home and
win their fourth straight game overall, as they battle the Fordham Rams
tonight in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
VCU has been on a roll with victories in eight of its last nine contests,
including Saturday's 97-89 double-overtime decision at La Salle. Treveon
Graham registered a double-double with 34 points and 12 rebounds. Juvonte
Reddic also recorded a double-double with 27 points and 15 boards. Briante
Weber tallied 12 points, five assists and all five of the team's steals.
Reddic (12.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg) averaged 22.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and shot 58.6
percent from the field in the Rams' two road wins at Dayton and at La Salle
last week, and for his efforts was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week
honors. He's in sole possession of fourth place on VCU's all-time rebounding
list and needs just seven steals to become the first player in school history
to record 1,200 points, 700 rebounds, 150 steals and 100 blocks. He paces the
team in field goal percentage (.550).
Coming into tonight's game, VCU is third in the A-10 in scoring (76.7 ppg) and
is allowing just 66.2 ppg, which ranks third in the conference. On the
downside, Shaka Smart's team is making just 42.5 percent of its shots, which
ranks 11th out of 13 conference teams. What has been fueling VCU has been
great defense, as the team is first in the A-10 in steals with 12 per game.
They're also making 7.7 shots from beyond the arc per outing, which tops the
Fordham is coming off a 90-52 loss at nationally-ranked UMass on Sunday. Chris
Whitehead scored 13 points to lead Fordham, which got its first conference win
of the season a week ago, a 76-70 at home against A-10 bottom dweller George
Freshman Jon Severe (20.2 ppg) and senior Branden Frazier (17.8 ppg) make up
the highest scoring backcourt in Atlantic 10 play. Sophomore Mandell Thomas
(11.9 ppg) and forward Ryan Rhoomes (7.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg), who is second in the
A-10 in field goal percentage (.652).
VCU, which is 9-0 at home this season, hasn't lost as the host since Jan. 26,
2013 against La Salle. Fordham, which gives up the most points in the Atlantic
10 (77.7 ppg), will have a difficult time stopping Reddic, or for that matter
the rest of the VCU squad.
