GAME NOTES: The Jacksonville State Gamecocks have made the trek to Johnson
Arena to take on the Morehead State Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference tilt.
Jacksonville State has alternated wins and losses over the last seven games.
The Gamecocks have been idle since last Saturday, when they dropped a 73-65
decision at Murray State. JSU is 10-14 overall, which includes a 4-5 league
Morehead State also lost its last game, falling to Belmont at home in a 76-73
final. That left the Eagles at 6-4 in last 10 outings, but they are 14-9
overall and two games over .500 in conference play (5-3).
Morehead State is 10-3 at home in the series, which it leads by a 17-8 margin.
The teams split the season series in 2012-13, with each winning on its home
Darion Rackley scored a game-high 18 points for the Gamecocks in the recent
loss to Murray State, while Avery Moore finished with 15 and Brian Williams
tallied 14 points. Trailing 44-41 in the second half, the Racers used a 10-0
run to take the lead for good.
The top scorer for Jacksonville State is Rackley (13.0 ppg), while Williams
isn't far off the pace with his 12.0 ppg. They are the only players averaging
in double figures, as the team scores just 66.2 ppg, second-worst in the
league, but plays great defense, giving up only 68.8 ppg, which is the top
yield in the OVC.
Drew Kelly tallied 23 points, five rebounds and three blocks for the Eagles in
their loss to Belmont. The Eagles also received 14 points and eight boards
from Billy Reader. Brent Arrington finished with a line of 11 points, seven
boards and four assists, while Luka Pajkovic netted 10 points. MSU took a
35-29 lead into intermission, but Belmont heated up to sink 60 percent of its
field goal attempts in the second period. Morehead State went in front, 73-66,
but Belmont scored the final 10 points of the contest to pull out the victory.
Morehead State has the ability to hang with Belmont at the offensive end of
the court, averaging a solid 78.2 ppg (third in the league). The team has also
done a nice job on the glass, pulling down a league-best 39.6 rpg and
outrebounding foes by 8.2 caroms per contest, also tops in the OVC. Angelo
Warner paces the team and ranks sixth in the conference in scoring at 17.1
ppg. Arrington is next on the team at 12.3 ppg, followed by Chad Posthumus,
who is averaging a double-double with 10.2 points and a conference-best 11.5
rebounds per game. Kareem Storey doesn't add much in terms of scoring (6.3
ppg), but he is third in the OVC in assists (5.5 apg).
In a battle of offense versus defense, expect the Gamecocks to keep the Eagles
in check and leave the Bluegrass State with a win.
