GAME NOTES: After a thrilling 90-86 overtime victory over conference rival
Tulsa, the Charlotte 49ers must make a quick turnaround as they get set to
host the North Texas Mean Green in Conference USA action at Halton Arena.
North Texas is also coming off a conference win Thursday night at Marshall.
The Mean Green maintained a steady pace to attain an 80-65 victory, which
snapped a two-game losing streak.
Charlotte's overtime victory gets the 49ers back in the win column after they
suffered a loss at Texas-San Antonio last Saturday. Charlotte's overtime win
gave the team its third victory in four games.
The all-time series is all tied up, 1-1. It's the first and only time these
new Conference USA foes will meet on the court during the regular season.
North Texas was able to cruise to a 15-point victory over Marshall thanks to
solid defense that was able to force 15 Herd turnovers. Jordan Williams netted
20 points to lead North Texas, adding 10 rebounds for the double-double. Colin
Voss scored 16 and pulled down nine rebounds, while Alzee Williams chipped in
10 points. The Mean Green shot 50 percent from the floor on the night.
Alzee Williams leads the team in scoring this season with 12.8 ppg on 45.1
percent shooting from the field. Only six of his 218 points this season have
come from beyond the 3-point arc, as Williams is 2-of-6 from long range on the
year. Jordan Williams is second on the squad with 11.8 ppg, and is the team's
leading rebounder at 6.2 rpg. North Texas averages 72.5 ppg.
Charlotte was down by eight points to Tulsa with 1:16 left to play in
regulation, but a late rally knotted the game up as time expired, sending it
to overtime. The 49ers were able to gain the advantage in the extra period,
coming away with the victory. Pierria Henry led the 49ers with 18 points and
nine rebounds, while Mike Thorne Jr. netted 13 and grabbed 11 boards for the
double-double. Denzel Ingram contributed 17 points in the win.
Shawn Lester, who has only started one game this season for Charlotte and who
had five points in the matchup with Tulsa, leads the team in scoring this
season with 12.3 ppg, followed closely by Henry at 12 ppg. Willie Clayton has
been a beast on the boards this year, averaging 9 rpg to go along with 11.8
ppg. Charlotte is averaging 76.2 ppg on 45.1 percent shooting.
This is a fairly even conference matchup, but the fact that it's taking place
in Charlotte helps the 49ers immensely, where the team is 6-2 on the year. If
the 49ers can get scoring like they did against Tulsa, North Texas should pose
