GAME NOTES: Both the San Jose State Spartans and the Utah State Aggies look to
rebound from Mountain West-opening losses as they clash in Logan in conference
San Jose State had a four-game winning streak snapped by Nevada, 62-50, in the
Spartans' Mountain West opener on Wednesday, dropping them below the .500 mark
this season with an overall record of 6-7.
Utah State is in a similar state of mind, as the Aggies had a five-game win
streak interrupted by Air Force, 73-72, on Wednesday. Utah State lost back-to-
back games earlier this season, but looks to avoid another setback at home
against the Spartans.
The Aggies lead the all-time series between the programs, 50-21. Utah State
has had a serious advantage in recent years, as the Aggies have won the past
The Spartans experienced a six-minute scoring drought against Nevada the last
time out that allowed the Wolfpack to run out and take the game, 62-50, in the
conference opener. Devante Wilson led the Spartans in the game with 18 points
on 4-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range and a perfect 6-of-6
from the free-throw line. Wilson added five rebounds and an assist. Chris
Cunningham was the only other Spartans player in double figures, as he netted
10 points and secured eight rebounds before fouling out.
Wilson is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.7 ppg and a healthy 4.4
rpg for his team. Rashad Muhammad is the Spartans leader in scoring this
season with a 16.4 ppg average on 41.6 percent shooting clip. Cunningham is
behind Wilson in scoring with 8.2 ppg, but leads the team averaging 7.2 rpg.
He's also tops on the Spartans roster in blocks this season with 14.
Utah State had its third straight game with at least 20 assists against Air
Force Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to earn a victory, as the Aggies fell,
73-72, in their Mountain West opener. Preston Medlin led all Aggies scorers
with 19 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the
charity stripe. He was one of four Utah State players to record double figures
against the Falcons. Spencer Butterfield (16), Jalen Moore (14) and Kyle Davis
(11) rounded out the Aggies' top four scorers.
Medlin and Butterfield are two of the team's top scorers, both averaging 14.2
ppg. Jarred Shaw averages 16.1 ppg, but has only played in eight games
compared to the 13 of Butterfield and Medlin. Davis averages 10.1 ppg and
leads the team in rebounding with an 8.6 rpg line. He's also the team's leader
in blocks this season with 20. Medlin leads the team with a 3.8 apg average.
Utah State has one of the better overall records in the Mountain West
Conference, but the loss to Air Force set them back early. Expect the Aggies
to fight back at home and get their first conference win.
