GAME NOTES: The Indiana State Sycamores put a five-game win streak to the test
as they host the Bradley Braves, a Missouri Valley Conference rival, Saturday
at the Hulman Center.
Bradley has struggled mightily in its last nine games, losing eight of them,
including a seven-game losing streak that started Dec. 4 and finally ended
with a win over Drake a month later on Jan. 4. The Braves are fresh off a
tight 68-65 loss to Missouri State on Wednesday.
Indiana State has experienced the opposite in terms of success, having won
five in a row and nine of the team's last 10 games. The Sycamores defeated
Drake, 77-73, on the road on Wednesday in their most recent contest and are
now 3-0 in league play.
Bradley holds an impressive all-time series lead over Indiana State, 50-29.
The two programs will meet up again in just over a month.
Bradley lost a heartbreaker to Missouri State just a few days ago, allowing
the Bears' Jarmar Gulley to score seven points in the final 1:01 of play to
help lift Missouri State to victory. Walt Lemon Jr. led the Braves with 25
points on 8-of-16 shooting, adding a team-high four assists with five
turnovers. Tyshon Pickett contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Omari
Grier and Ka'Darryl Bell each netted 10.
Lemon is the go-to guy this season, scoring a team-best 16.8 ppg with 60 total
assists and a team-leading 32 steals. The guard shoots 42.6 percent from the
floor in over 33 minutes of action per game. Unfortunately for Lemon, his
assist number is canceled out by his 61 turnovers. Pickett is next on the
Braves' roster with 12.4 ppg, and is the team's top rebounder at 7.4 rpg.
Pickett shoots 51.5 percent from the floor.
Indiana State, with its win over Drake on Wednesday, improved to 3-0 in MVC
play for the first time since the 1978-79 season. Manny Arop paced the
Sycamores with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor, He added six
rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes of play. Jake Odum netted 15 points and
dished out a team-high six assists in the Sycamores' win.
Odum and Arop can be found at the top of the team's scoring chart this season,
with Odum averaging 13.1 ppg and Arop not too far behind at 12.9 ppg. Odum is
a do-it-all player for the Sycamores, averaging 4.6 rpg and leading the team
with 74 assists this season. Arop is an efficient shooter, netting 49.7
percent of his shots from the field, including 45.5 from 3-point range. As a
team, Indiana State averages 78.1 ppg to their opponents' 69.9 ppg.
It's impossible to overlook the way Indiana State has come together as a solid
unit this season. The team is playing its best basketball, while Bradley is
struggling to find any sort of rhythm.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Indiana State 80, Bradley 70
