GAMES NOTES: In the quarterfinal round of the Big South Conference
Tournament the Campbell Camels will battle the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at the
HTC Center with a trip to the conference semifinals on the line.
Campbell survived in an overtime duel with Presbyterian in the first round
to advance to Thursday's matchup. The Camels, who are the third seed out of
the conference's North Division, captured the 81-73 victory after having
lost its last three games to close out the regular season.
As the No. 2 seed out of the South Division, Gardner-Webb had a bye in the
first round of the tourney. The Bulldogs won seven straight games to close
out the regular season as they became the only team to earn at least 20 wins
overall in the Big South. It is the first time the Bulldogs have ever posted
20 wins as a Division I member as they take aim at their first ever conference
If this matchup is anything like the meeting from earlier this season this
second round tilt will be one to remember. The Bulldogs and Camels needed
three overtimes to decide the contest which Campbell came out on top of with a
91-83 victory. Trey Freeman scored 24 points and handed out nine assists and
Darius Leonard posted a double-double as the Camels evened the all-time series
at 10 wins apiece.
Campbell was locked in an overtime battle against Presbyterian in the first
round on Tuesday. The Camels let a 35-22 halftime lead slip away in the
contest as they had a pair of turnovers in their last two possessions in the
final 20 seconds. The Camels opened the extra session on a 10-2 run to take
control as they pulled out the win.
Trey Freeman (14.4 ppg, 5.8 apg) had 22 points in the win over Gardner-Webb
for his third game with at least 20 points in the last seven games. Freeman
was second in the conference in assists this season while also leading the
Camels in scoring. Darian Hooker (10.2 ppg) has been the only other
double-digit scorer on the roster for the Camels. As a team the Camels score
69.6 points per game while shooting just under 45 percent from the field. On
defense the Camels have been not been very successful with teams putting in
72.6 points per game on 45.2 percent shooting.
Gardner-Webb also took down Presbyterian in its last outing when it closed the
regular season with a 76-57 win this past Saturday. Donta Harper scored 21
points to lead four players in double figures for the Bulldogs while shooting
60.4 percent from the field as a team.
Tashan Newsome (14.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg) tops the team in scoring and has scored in
double figures in three straight games entering the postseason. Harper (12.9
ppg) stumbled down the stretch as he failed to score in double figures in the
previous two games of he season before netting a season-high against
Presbyterian. The calling card for the Bulldogs has been the defensive end
where they have limited teams to 60.5 points per game on 42.3 percent
shooting. Garnder-Webb also ranks among the top 50 teams in the country in
steals (8.1 pg). Offensively the Bulldogs are not as potent as they rank
second to last in the Big South in points scored (65.8 pg) and field-goal
As long as Gardner-Webb can keep up the defensive intensity against Campbell
the Bulldogs should roll into the next round.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Gardner-Webb 69, Campbell 61
