GAME NOTES: The Drexel Dragons travel to Williamsburg, Virginia to take on the
William & Mary Tribe in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt at Kaplan Arena.
Drexel comes into the matchup having dropped three straight decisions, the
most being a 51-43 final at James Madison. Before this recent stretch, the
Dragons had won 17 straight regular-season CAA games.
After dropping a 74-58 decision to Georgia State on Wednesday night, William &
Mary comes into this contest having loss its last six games.
Drexel leads the all-time series with the Tribe, 18-9, which includes
victories in each of the last three meetings. Last season, the Dragons downed
the Tribe, 64-48, in Williamsburg, before escaping with a narrow, 63-61
triumph in Philadelphia.
The Dragons dropped their most recent outing, losing to JMU by eight. The
contest was tied with under five minutes to play, but the Dukes scored 10
straight to pull out the victory. Frantz Massenat led Drexel with 13 points,
but on just 4-for-15 shooting from the floor. Tavon Allen and Ruffin each
scored eight points. Kazembe Abif finished with a career-high nine rebounds.
Offensively, the Dragons average 62.9 ppg, while shooting 42.4 percent from
the floor. Drexel leads the CAA in 3-point percentage (.351) and ranks third
in free-throw percentage (.725). The Dragons rank second in the CAA in scoring
defense, holding opponents to 65.2 ppg, and that figure drops to 60.8 ppg
against league foes. Drexel ranks third in the CAA, outrebounding their
opponents by four per contest. Sophomore Damion Lee leads the team in scoring
at 18.1 ppg, which ranks second in the CAA, but he has missed four contests
this season, including each of the last two. He is shooting 36.4 percent from
3-point range and 83.9 percent from the free throw line, to go along with
5.2 rpg. His free throw percentage ranks second in the CAA, while his 3-point
percentage is fifth. Massenat is averaging 14.1 ppg, while adding 4.3 apg,
which is second in the league. Daryl McCoy, who also missed the Dragons' game
at JMU, is the team's leading rebounder and he ranks fourth in the league at
The Tribe lost at Georgia State on Wednesday night, 74-58. Tim Rusthoven led
William & Mary with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Marcus Thornton added 13
points. W&M led by as many as 14 in the opening half, but GSU shot
51.9 percent in the second half to rally for the win.
The team's leading scorer, Thornton ranks second in the CAA and 42nd
nationally with 18 ppg. Rusthoven adds 14.1 points and 7.1 caroms per contest.
The Tribe is the top shooting team in the CAA and is second in scoring,
dropping in 68.3 ppg. W&M is the tops in defending the 3-pointer and fourth-
best in the country (.268). The Tribe also leads the CAA in field goal
percentage (.452) and assists (14.0), while ranking second in scoring (68.3),
3-pointers made (6.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0).
Both teams come in desperate for a win. The Dragons get back their top scorer
and top rebounder, so expect the Dragons to have a strong outing and hand the
Tribe their seventh straight defeat.
