GAME NOTES: Sporting a perfect 5-0 record on the road so far this season, the
College of Charleston Cougars face another Southern Conference test on Monday
night, as they clash with the Bulldogs of The Citadel at McAlister Field
Not only is Charleston undefeated on the road in 2012-13, the team is also off
to a 3-1 start in conference play as well. Over the weekend, the Cougars
completely dominated Chattanooga at home in an 86-59 final, marking the team's
sixth victory in the last seven contests.
The Bulldogs showed some early promise this season with three wins in four
tries, although only one of those came against another Division I program.
Since then the squad has dropped 10 straight decisions, the latest coming on
Saturday night versus the Samford Bulldogs in a 69-65 final at home.
In terms of the all-time series, the Cougars own a 49-39 advantage over The
Citadel, winning four straight and five of the last six encounters. The
Bulldogs have won just three times since 2003.
Anthony Stitt scored a game-high 20 points, leading five players in double
figures, as the College of Charleston crushed the Chattanooga Mocs by 27
points in a Southern Conference matchup at TD Arena on Saturday. Adjehi Baru
and Willis Hall both tallied 13 points for the Cougars, combining for 17
rebounds as well, while Trent Wiedeman and Anthony Thomas dropped in 11 points
apiece, the latter tying Baru for the rebounding lead with nine as the team
won the rebounding battle overall, 46-32. While he has missed a pair of games,
Lawrence is listed as the top scorer for the program with 13.4 ppg, although
he has the same overall point total (188) as Stitt who is averaging 11.8 ppg .
The pair has also combined for 114 assists, with many of those surely going to
Baru (10.0 ppg) who has more than likely created several of his own shot
opportunities thanks to 46 offensive rebounds, part of his 9.1 rpg overall.
Before playing even with Samford in the second half of their meeting over the
weekend, the Bulldogs of The Citadel turned the ball over 10 times through the
first 20 minutes of action, leaving them four points behind which is where
they ended up at the final buzzer. Matt Van Scyoc was the leading scorer for
the hosts with 19 points, hitting 4-of-9 shots from behind the 3-point line,
followed by Marshall Harris III who tallied 12 points, seven assists and four
steals, while P.J. Morgan tacked on 11 points off the bench. In addition to
Van Scyoc who is averaging 10.9 ppg, the other double-digit scorer for the
Bulldogs is Mike Groselle (13.9 ppg) who is also the top man on the glass with
7.6 rpg. Unfortunately, this is a group that continues to have trouble slowing
down the competition, giving up 75.1 ppg.
Based on the team's success on the road and in this series, not to mention the
beating it put on Chattanooga over the weekend, expect to see the Cougars
cruise to another win on Monday night.
