GAME NOTES: A pair of teams near the bottom of the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference standings are set to collide as the Siena Saints clash with the
Marist Red Foxes at McCann Arena on Sunday.
The Saints own a 46-23 all-times series lead over Marist. Siena had its 10-
game win streak in the rivalry snapped in the most recent meeting. Siena has
won four of the last five at McCann Arena after losing four in a row.
In what has been a miserable season, Siena fell yet again on Friday to
Niagara, 78-69, for its third straight loss. The team was unable to come out
on top despite Evan Hymes equaling his career-high with 30 points. Ball
control really made a difference in the outcome. Niagara scored 20 points off
of 12 Siena turnovers, while it coughed the ball up just three times itself.
The setback moves the Saints to just 4-16 overall and dropped them to a dismal
2-7 MAAC record. Siena has lost eight away games in a row since winning at
Navy in overtime by a five-point margin on Veteran's Day. The tough season has
dropped coach Mitch Buonaguro to a 31-51 record with the school.
Siena has struggled offensively all season and is currently the worst shooting
team in the MAAC (.389 FG percentage). That has led the team to put up just
58.4 points per game, while assisting on just 10.0 field goals per outing. All
three of those marks are among the 20 worst in the country. O.D. Anosike (12.8
ppg, 11.6 rpg) has been a bright spot as he currently leads the MAAC in
rebounding. Siena is the only team in the MAAC with four players averaging
double figures. Those four account for 75 percent of the team's scoring this
season.
The Red Foxes lost for the ninth time in 10 games on Thursday when they were
dealt a 71-37 defeat at Fairfield. In the contest, the Stags shot 11-of-22
from 3-point range, while Marist finished with more turnovers (18) than field
goals (14). Marist's loss dropped it to 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the MAAC
standings. Anell Alexis tallied 10 points in the loss, but none of his
teammates joined him in double-figures as the squad shot just 31.1 percent
from the floor. Although he is usually a reliable scorer, Chavaughn Lewis
(14.2 ppg) had just seven points on 2-of-14 from the field.
Lewis and Devin Price are tied for the team scoring lead with 14.6 ppg apiece.
None of the other Red Foxes are scoring in double figures consistently, but
Adam Kemp is pulling down 8.0 boards per tilt, which is the third highest
average in the MAAC. Marist is in the bottom half of the conference in scoring
offense (61.4), field goal percentage (0.389), and rebounding margin (-5.8)
Both these teams are going to leave everything on the floor in this one, as it
is a rivalry game between two teams thirsty for improvement. Although either
could come out on top, the margin of victory is not likely to be too great.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Siena 67, Marist 61
