GAME NOTES: Seeking their first four-game win streak of the season, the Green
Bay Phoenix host the Cleveland State Vikings in a Horizon League bout at the
Resch Center on Saturday afternoon.
After winning a total of just three games through the first 10 outings of
2012-13, the Phoenix have now recorded a pair of three-game win streaks over
the last eight contests. On Thursday night, the squad knocked off Youngstown
State at home in a 67-58 final to move to 3-2 in conference play, and 8-1 at
home.
As for the Vikings, who have won just once in nine true road dates this
season, they were surprised by Milwaukee two nights ago in a 69-57 decision on
the road which means they are now 2-3 in league play.
With respect to the all-time series, Green Bay leads by a 37-27 mark. The
teams split their two meetings a season ago, with each winning on their home
floors.
Bryn Forbes played almost the entire game on Thursday night, shooting 4-of-10
behind the 3-point line as he finished with 16 points for the Vikings, but it
wasn't nearly enough as the team suffered the 12-point road loss at the
Klotsche Center. Charlie Lee accounted for 15 points and Sebastian Douglas 10,
while Marlin Mason chipped in with seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds
and four blocked shots, but at the same time he shot just 3-of-16 from the
field. Over the course of five conference games the Vikings have generated
just 58.8 ppg, shooting 38.7 percent from the floor overall and 31.5 percent
out on the perimeter. Forbes is the lone double-digit scorer over that stretch
with his 15.6 ppg, thanks in large part to his 41.9 percent effort on the
outside where he has knocked down 13 attempts and the rest of the team a
combined 16 triples.
Jordan Fouse scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Green Bay
Phoenix captured the nine-point win over the Youngstown State Penguins in
Horizon League action at the Resch Center two nights ago. Carrington Love and
Brennan Cougill both added 11 points and Keifer Sykes 10 for the Phoenix as
they survived just 1-of-6 shooting beyond the arc and 16 turnovers. However,
Green Bay not only won the rebounding battle by a 40-31 margin, it also
outscored the visitors at the free-throw line, 24-14. Defense has been the
name of the game for Green Bay in conference play, limiting the opposition to
just 35.2 percent accuracy from the floor and allowing a mere 59.6 ppg on the
scoreboard. Sykes (12.0 ppg) and Alec Brown (11.6 ppg) are both key figures on
offense, but at the same time neither is shooting even 40 percent from the
field and they've combined to make just 4-of-17 on the outside.
As long as Green Bay doesn't get caught up in a high-tempo contest where the
offense has to produce, expect to see the home team defend well enough to
capture the win on Saturday.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Green Bay 64, Cleveland State 60
