GAME NOTES: The Seahawks of UNC Wilmington try to complete the season sweep of
the Old Dominion Monarchs when the two teams meet up at the Ted Constant
Convocation Center on Wednesday night.
The Seahawks have had a disappointing season as they are still six games under
.500 and just 5-9 in league play entering the week. Last Saturday, the team
did manage to snap a two-game slide with a 73-67 upset of Northeastern at
home, handing the Huskies just their third conference loss of the campaign.
As for the Monarchs, this season has been so ugly that they've already fired
the most successful coach in their history and have just one more win to show
for their efforts since making the move. Over the weekend, the program bowed
to William & Mary at home in a 74-62 final, the third straight setback for a
group that is now a mere 1-13 in league play and a dismal 3-23 overall.
Last month, the Seahawks hosted ODU and came away with the 65-60 victory at
Trask Coliseum, which means the all-time series now stands at 29-18 in favor
of the Monarchs.
Keith Rendleman erupted for 23 points and 11 rebounds, not to mention four
steals, as he and the Seahawks stunned conference-leading Northeastern over
the weekend by six points at home. Cedrick Williams contributed another 12
points and nine boards, while Chris Dixon came close to registering a double-
double of his own with nine points and a game-high nine assists for the hosts
as they held the Huskies to just 26.9 percent accuracy beyond the arc.
Rendleman is the one who typically gives this team a chance for victory,
leading them in both scoring (16.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.4 ppg), although
he has left a ton of points at the free-throw line where he has shot just 115-
of-190 (.605). Of the other five players who are scoring at least 5.0 ppg for
the Seahawks, only one is shooting better than 40 percent from the floor so it
is easy to see why this group is struggling.
Not unusual for the Monarchs these days, the team fell behind against William
& Mary right out of the gate and never recovered, eventually losing by a dozen
at home. Aaron Bacote tried to give the group a fighting chance with his
career-high 20 points, shooting 4-of-8 behind the 3-point line, but the team
as a whole was just 27.3 percent accurate out on the perimeter. Making matters
worse was the fact that the squad failed to make even one of its seven chances
at the free-throw line, the first time in program history that's ever
happened. DeShawn Painter logged 16 points and 10 rebounds, but was charged
with seven turnovers, while Dimitri Batten tacked on 12 points.
Painter is the only player averaging in double figures at the moment for ODU,
hitting for 12.7 ppg. He is also first with 8.5 rpg, but it must be difficult
for him to give his full effort every time out knowing that more than likely
the team will end up in the loss column yet again. Shooting just 27.1 percent
beyond the arc these days, the Monarchs rarely give themselves a chance of
landing in the win column.
Playing at home has done little to fire up ODU this season, so expect to see
the squad come up short yet again on Wednesday night.
