GAME NOTES: The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks try to make it two straight home wins
on Saturday when they host the Hofstra Pride in a Colonial Athletic
Association affair at Trask Coliseum.
UNC snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday, as Keith Rendleman
recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to power the Seahawks
past the Georgia State Panthers, 76-72.
Craig Ponder contributed a team-high 17 points and four assists off the bench,
while Cedrick Williams added 14 points and six boards. Chris Dixon and Freddie
Jackson recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively, as UNC-Wilmington won for the
eighth time in 10 home games this season.
Hofstra, meanwhile, enters Saturday's contest riding a seven-game losing
streak after dropping a 62-57 decision to the Northeastern on Wednesday.
Stephen Nwaukoni registered his second double-double of the season with 11
points and 13 rebounds, while Stevie Mejia added 11 points and Taran Buie
contributed 10 points for the Pride, who have lost 16 of their last 18 games.
Hofstra's struggles could continue against UNC-Wilmington, as it has lost all
11 road games it has played this season. The Pride lost to the Seahawks
earlier in the season and are 12-14 in the all-time series.
Rendleman (15.7 ppg, 10.3 rpg) is the only player on UNC-Wilmington's roster
scoring in double figures and one of just three putting in more than eight
points per game. Chris Dixon (9.5 ppg) and Craig Ponder (8.7 ppg) are the next
best options but both are shooting just a tad over 40 percent from the field.
The lack of scoring options has UNC Wilmington currently ranked eighth in the
CAA in scoring (62.0 ppg), while sitting ninth in field-goal percentage
As much trouble as the Seahawks have putting the ball in the basket it pales
in comparison to Hofstra. The Pride are the lowest scoring (59.3 ppg) and
worst shooting (.386 FG percentage) team in the CAA with each of those marks
among the 25 worst in the country. Defense hasn't exactly been a strength
either with the Pride allowing 68.3 points per game on 44.2 percent shooting.
Buie (14.2 ppg) and Mejia (10.5 ppg, 4.0 apg) run the Pride out of the
backcourt as the team's top two offensive options. Mejia is also the third
best distributor in the conference but has had very few players to get the
ball to as no other player scores more than 7.5 points per game. Nwaukoni (6.8
ppg, 7.8 rpg) doesn't add much offensively but is a strong rebounder.
UNC-Wilmington may not contend for a conference title or even see a postseason
tournament. However, they will be the better team on the court Saturday and
should cruise to another home win.
