GAME NOTES: The lone unbeaten team in Colonial Athletic Association play at
this point in the campaign, the Northeastern Huskies take the floor at
Matthews Arena in Boston on Wednesday night as they play host to the Georgia
Over the weekend, the Huskies recorded a resounding 71-51 victory over George
Mason at home, marking the team's eighth win in a row which is the longest run
for the program since putting together a streak of 11 straight back in
2009-10. Northeastern has also won four in a row at home after starting the
campaign with a mark of 1-5 in its own building.
As for the Panthers, they are currently tied with Towson for fifth place in
the CAA standings with a record of 5-4 after losing to Drexel on the road last
Saturday, 68-57. The defeat snapped a four-game win streak for the squad and
has it just 3-7 on the road in 2012-13, which isn't a good sign as it heads to
The Huskies lead the all-time series by a count of 9-5, thanks in part to a
60-57 win in the last meeting played in Boston. However, the Panthers are the
ones who claimed victory in the most recent encounter regardless of venue,
with a 61-59 triumph in Atlanta last February.
Manny Atkins logged the first double-double of his career in the meeting with
Drexel, delivering 15 points and 10 rebounds as he converted all eight of his
attempts at the free-throw line, but still the Panthers took the loss after
being held without a field goal for almost 14 minutes during one stretch.
Devonta White accounted for 14 points and Rashaad Richardson 12, the latter
reaching double figures for the fourth time in the last six outings, but still
it wasn't enough. In conference games, Atkins (15.1 ppg) and White (13.6 ppg)
are key figures at the offensive end of the floor, having combined for 62 of
the unit's 105 assists over nine games, while R.J. Hunter is responsible for a
team-best 16.7 ppg.
Holding George Mason to just 33.9 percent from the floor and 4-of-17 behind
the 3-point line, the Huskies made it look rather easy to dismiss the visitors
by 20 points on Sunday night. Quincy Ford and Joel Smith both tallied a team-
best 15 points for the hosts, the former grabbing seven rebounds and the
latter clearing six boards and handing out six assists along the way. Reggie
Spencer checked in with 14 points and six rebounds and Dinko Marshavelski
another 11 points as he made 5-of-6 shots from the floor in just 10 minutes
off the bench. One of two players to have started all 20 games this season,
Smith leads the team with 16.6 ppg, stemming from his 40.7 percent accuracy on
the perimeter. Ford accounts for 13.3 ppg and 6.0 rpg for a team that is
closing in on 70 ppg at this point in the season.
GSU has the talent to take down the Huskies for sure, but Northeastern seems
to have found a groove at home in recent weeks and has certainly been on top
of CAA opponents all year long, which is why picking against the hosts might
not be a good idea.
