GAME NOTES: The Delaware Blue Hens host the Towson Tigers at the Bob
Carpenter Center in a Colonial Athletic Association bout in Newark on
After having its four-game win streak snapped on Saturday, Towson will look to
get back on track. The Tigers are seeking their fourth straight road win for
the first time since the 2005-06 season. Coincidentally, the fourth win of
that streak came at Delaware on Jan. 14, 2006. The Tigers will also be seeking
to have a record of .500 or better after 18 games for the first time since
that same season.
They will be running into a streaking Delaware team that has opened CAA play
with three consecutive victories for just the second time since joining the
league prior to the 2001-02 season. The Blue Hens opened the 2007-08 campaign
with five straight league wins. Delaware has won 10 consecutive regular season
CAA games, the fourth-longest conference winning streak in school history.
Delaware leads the all-time series with Towson, 41-27, and the Blue Hens have
won the last five meetings between the two schools. Delaware went 3-0 against
Towson last season, including a win in the CAA Tournament. Delaware is 27-7
against the Tigers in Newark, and has captured the previous two matchups in
the Bob Carpenter Center.
Towson is coming off a 70-59 loss at home to CAA-leading Northeastern on
Saturday. Junior Jerrelle Benimon posted his NCAA-leading 11th double-double
in the game with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Benimon is tied for first nationally with 11 double-doubles and ranks fourth
in the country in rebounding (11.6 rpg). He leads Towson in scoring (17.1 ppg)
and rebounding, as well as field-goal percentage, field goals made, field
goals attempted, free-throws made, free throws attempted, blocks and minutes
played. He's second on the team in assists and steals. After averaging 12.5
points and 3.0 assists per game last week, Tiger freshman Jerome Hairston was
honored as the CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday. It was the second time this
season that Hairston has garnered the weekly award. Towson is scoring 65.6
points per game but allowing 65.9. Towson leads the CAA in rebounding offense,
blocked shots and field goal percentage defense. The Tigers also rank in the
top-20 nationally in blocks (19th) and top-50 in both field-goal percentage
defense and rebounding margin.
Devon Saddler buried a contested 3-pointer just before the final buzzer as the
Blue Hens posted a dramatic 86-83 victory over Georgia State Saturday
afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena. Saddler scored a game-high 29 points to
record his sixth 20-point effort of the season. Jarvis Threatt added 18
points, while Josh Brinkley finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Jamelle
Hagins chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
In the game against Georgia State, Hagins tied the school record for career
rebounds with 916. He currently leads the nation with 11.9 rebounds per game
and is tied for fourth in the country with 10 double-doubles. Hagins also
leads the CAA with 8.6 defensive rebounds per game and a 56.7 field-goal
percentage, while ranking second with 2.4 blocks per game, and third with 3.4
offensive rebounds per game. Hagins also has scored 995 career points, and
needs just five more to become the 30th player in Delaware history to reach
the 1,000-point mark. Saddler leads the conference and is tied for 14th in
Division I with 20.6 points per game. The Blue Hens are scoring 69.4 ppg, but
opponents are scoring 69.9.
This is a matchup of two of the premier big men in the conference and the
nation for that matter. With a couple of milestones within reach for Hagins,
expect the Blue Hens to have extra incentive that should result in the win.
