GAME NOTES: An intrastate battle takes place in Indianapolis on Saturday
evening, as the Indiana State Sycamores do battle with the IUPUI Jaguars.
This will be the fifth straight game against an in-state foe for the Jaguars,
who are coming off a 65-59 triumph over IU Northwest on Tuesday. John Hart had
18 points and Ian Chiles added 15, while Lyonell Gaines pulled down 19
rebounds for the Jags, who won despite shooting a paltry 35.6 percent from the
field. The 19 boards by Gaines was a Division I era record for IUPUI, one shy
of the all-time, single-game record held by Michael Boles (March 7, 1993).
Hart leads the way with 15.2 ppg, while Mitchell Patton (14.6 ppg) and Chiles
(14.0 ppg) are also averaging double figures. Patton, though, has missed the
past two games due to injury. Donovan Gibbs (7.3 rpg) paces the squad in
rebounding. IUPUI has been outscored in the paint in seven of its 12 games by
an average of seven points, and the team is 0-7 when being outscored inside.
The Sycamores are coming off two straight losses, the most recent of which
being a 71-63 setback at Morehead State a week ago to open a five-game road
trip. Khristian Smith had 20 point and Manny Arop added 19 in the losing
effort. Jake Odum also finished in double figures with 15 points. Morehead
State's reserves played a big role in the outcome, as they outscored the ISU
bench, 41-6 for the game. Indiana State is paced by Odum (15.1 ppg) and Arop
(10.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg).
IUPUI is 2-2 all-time against Indiana State, with each team winning twice at
home. ISU hasn't won on the road against a member from the Summit League since
topping IPFW on Nov. 19, 2006.
The magic number for the Sycamores is 63. Indiana State is 4-0 on the season
when holding teams to that many points or less, and is 30-1 under head coach
Greg Lansing in those situations. On the flip side, rebounding will be key for
IUPUI. The Jaguars are 4-0 this season when outrebounding their opponents and
14-4 dating back to last season. Conversely, the Jaguars are 0-8 when being
outrebounded this year and 4-21 under head coach Todd Howard in his two
seasons at the helm.
