GAME NOTES: Coming off consecutive defeats, the Richmond Spiders will try to
remain unbeaten at home when they battle the Davidson Wildcats in a non-
conference affair on Saturday evening.
The Spiders were 67-64 losers to George Mason at Richmond Coliseum a week ago
thanks to Sherrod Wright's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Darien Brothers scored 20
points for Richmond, which lost its second in a row after a five-game win
streak. Derrick Williams tallied 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss, a
game in which the Spiders blew a 12-point advantage with eight minutes to
Richmond is 7-0 at home this season and sports a 47-8 mark in its last 55 home
games. Additionally, the Spiders are 34-4 in their last 38 non-conference home
contests going back to the 2007-08 season.
The success of the Spiders is tied to a balanced offensive attack, as four
players average double figures in scoring, led by Brothers (14.9 ppg). The
junior guard and Richmond native needs 12 points to become the 41st player in
school history to reach 1,000 career points. Junior forward Derrick Williams
is right behind Brothers at 14.8 ppg and he's eighth in the Atlantic 10 in
rebounding at 7.0 per contest. Williams is also seventh in the conference in
field goal percentage by making 56.7 percent of his attempts. Kendall Anthony
comes off the bench at 12.5 points a game, while junior guard Cedrick Lindsay
also posts double figures at 10.4 ppg. The Spiders have hit better than half
of their total shots in the past four games, and are second in the A-10 in 3-
point percentage (.382) and second in the conference with 8.3 3-pointers per
Davidson is also coming off a loss, 69-58, to Drexel in Philadelphia a week
ago. The Wildcats were no match for the Dragons' size, as the home team held a
40-14 rebounding advantage. De'Mon Brooks scored 16 points, while Nik Cochran
and Jake Cohen each finished with 10 points for the visitors. Davidson
struggled in the second half, making only 39.1 percent of its field goal
attempts, including a mere 3-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc. Brooks leads
the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and in rebounding (6.2 rpg). Cohen (12.1 ppg)
is the only other player averaging double figures, but starters Cohen (9.0
ppg) and Chris Czerapowicz (9.2 ppg) are close behind.
These two schools met last year for the first time since 1976 with Davidson
winning at home, 74-61. Davidson has won 29 of the 41 all-time meetings, but
with Richmond's recent success at home, the Spiders will use their offensive
balance to hold off the Wildcats in this battle between former Southern
