GAME NOTES: Still seeking their first Atlantic 10 Conference road win of the
campaign, the Dayton Flyers head south to face the Charlotte 49ers at Halton
Arena on Wednesday night.
The Flyers are fresh off a 76-66 home loss to Massachusetts on Saturday,
marking their third loss in the last four outings, and putting them in 13th
place in the A-10 standings with a league ledger of 4-8. Only 12 teams make
the conference tournament and the Flyers sit one and half games out 12th
place. This is UD's 18th season in the conference, and in each of the previous
17 years the Flyers earned a berth to the A-10 Tournament.
Charlotte has suffered losses in four of its last five outings, including a
71-51 setback at home to Temple on Sunday, with the lone win being an upset of
then-No. 11 Butler back on Feb. 13. They are currently tied with three other
teams for eighth place in the conference.
Dayton leads the all-time series with Charlotte, 7-4, and the Flyers have won
the last three encounters. Last season, UD won at home, 75-65, behind 14
points from Devin Oliver.
Vee Sanford led the Flyers with 14 points, but the team fell again at
Massachusetts over the weekend. Josh Benson scored 12 points off the bench,
and Jalen Robinson added 10 as Dayton fell to 14-12 overall. UMass closed the
game on a 12-4 run in the final 4:05. Other contributors for the Flyers
included Kevin Dillard with eight points and six assists, Matt Derenbecker
with nine points, and Dyshawn Pierre who tallied eight rebounds.
Dayton ranks first in the conference in 3-point shooting (.380). Dillard
continues to lead the team in scoring (14.8), assists (4.6), 3-pointers (46),
free throws (108), free throw percentage (.878), minutes (32.7) and is tied
for the team lead in steals (30). Sanford (12.3 ppg) and Benson (10.3 ppg)
also add to the Flyers offense. Oliver ranks fifth in the A-10 in overall
rebounding (8.0 rpg). He also leads the Flyers with five double-doubles this
season, and is tied for the team lead in steals with 30.
Mike Thorne recorded his first career double-digit scoring effort with 10
points off the bench, but it wasn't nearly enough as Charlotte fell at home to
Temple over the weekend. Pierria Henry recorded his 22nd career double-figure
scoring game with 10 points, while Mike Thorn and Darion Clark each grabbed
seven rebounds in the losing cause.
Charlotte possesses the best field goal defense in the A-10, with opponents
shooting just 40 percent from the floor. The 49ers are without their leading
scorer, DeMario Mayfield, who was dismissed from the team last Friday for
violation of athletic department policy. Mayfield, who had been suspended
since Jan. 30, was averaging a team-high 11.7 ppg to go along with 3.6 rpg
this season. Chris Braswell leads the charge now, averaging 11.1 points and
5.6 caroms per contest, all of which he does in coming off the bench. Willie
Clayton paces the club in rebounding with 6.8 per outing.
The Flyers are hoping to secure a spot in the upcoming conference tournament,
but their performance on the road this season doesn't bode well for their
chances. Expect the 49ers to capitalize and steal a victory.
