Fort Wayne, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by a game-high 23 points from Luis
Jacobo, the IUPU-Ft. Wayne Mastodons downed the Western Illinois Leathernecks,
77-64, in a Summit League matchup at Gates Sports Center.
For the Mastodons (18-6, 6-1 Summit), Steve Forbes added 18 points and Joe
Reed chipped in with 10 points.
Garret Covington led the Leathernecks (9-13, 3-4) with 18 points, while Adam
Link finished with 13 points, Jabari Sandifer added 12 and Mike Miklusak
Both teams shot well to start the contest. Ft. Wayne was the better of the
two, connecting on 57.7 percent, including 5-of-13 from 3-point range, as the
Mastodons led at the break, 41-32. Western Illinois stayed close by hitting on
50 percent of its shots from the field, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
After the intermission, the Mastodons cooled off, making just 44 percent from
the field but did drain 6-of-12 from deep. The Leathernecks stayed hot, making
55 percent of their field goal tries and 3-of-9 from 3-point distance. The
Leathernecks got as close as two on several occasions, the last with under
seven minutes to play, but the Mastodons closed the game on a 15-4 run to hold
on for the victory.
Ft. Wayne had the edge in the paint, outscoring Western Illinois 22-18, and
the advantage in rebounding, 32-19. The Mastodons also converted 12 offensive
rebounds into 17 second chance points.
