NCAA Game Summary - Southern Utah at Portland State
(Saturday, January 25th)
Final Score: Portland State 67, Southern Utah 64
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Dashaun Wiggins scored 15 points off the
bench, leading four players in double figures, as the Portland State Vikings
claimed a 67-64 win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in Big Sky Conference
action at the Stott Center.
Gary Winston pitched in with 13 points for the Vikings (8-8, 3-4 Big Sky),
followed by Andre Winston and Tim Douglas with 11 and 10 points, respectively,
for a squad that has won three times in the last four outings.
The Thunderbirds (1-16, 0-8) were led by McKay Anderson and Jaren Jeffery with
12 points apiece, the former converting all four of his 3-point attempts,
followed by AJ Hess with 11 points, the lone starter in double figures.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half as they each made just
nine field goals, but even with PSU missing all six chances behind the 3-point
line, a 12-8 edge at the charity stripe provided the home team with a narrow
30-29 advantage at the break.
In the second half SUU kept things interesting with 54.2 percent from the
field and 4-of-6 on the outside, but again it was free-throw shooting that
made the difference as the Vikings outscored the visitors by an 11-5 margin.
SUU, which has now dropped 16 consecutive decisions, has not defeated a single
opponent from Division I this season. The lone victory for the program was in
the opener versus Arizona Christian, a squad that competes at the NAIA level.
