Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Rian Pearson tallied a double-double with 11
points and 10 rebounds, as the Toledo Rockets outlasted the Kent State Golden
Flashes, 81-78, in a Mid-American Conference clash at Savage Hall.
Justin Drummond led the way with 15 points for Toledo (17-2, 5-1 MAC), which
extended its winning streak to five games. Julius Brown and J.D. Weatherspoon
netted 14 points apiece, with Brown also dishing out seven assists.
For Kent State (11-8, 2-5), Darren Goodson paced all scorers with 17 points.
Derek Jackson poured in 16 points and Kris Brewer tallied 14 points and seven
Toledo carried a slight 37-36 lead into intermission after shooting 46.2
percent from the field and 12-of-18 from the foul line in the first half. Kent
State kept the game close by draining 42.4 percent of its field goal tries in
the opening 20 minutes.
The Golden Flashes surged ahead by six points with five and a half minutes to
play, but the Rockets ripped off an 11-3 run, with Weatherspoon's dunk with
2:14 proving to be the game-winner. Toledo made 5-of-7 at the free-throw line
over the final 1:29 to help seal the win.
In a game that had 12 ties and 13 lead changes, Toledo earned a 27-9 scoring
advantage at the free-throw line.
