Carbondale, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Beane led the way with 27 points
as the Southern Illinois Salukis outlasted the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers in
overtime, 81-76, in Missouri Valley Conference action at SIU Arena.
For the Salukis (8-15, 4-6 MVC), Desmar Jackson added 20 points and Jalen
Pendleton finished with 12 points.
Milton Doyle led the Ramblers (8-14, 3-7) with 27 points, while Jeff White
scored 16 with five assists, Christian Thomas finished with 15 and seven
rebounds, and Devon Turk chipped in with 12.
Loyola shot well to open the game, connecting on 54.2 percent of its field
goal tries, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, as the Ramblers took a 35-30
lead into intermission. SIU made 46.2 percent of its shots from the field but
just 2-of-7 from beyond the arc.
In the second half, the Salukis found their range, connecting on 60 percent of
their field goal attempts and 2-of-4 from deep. The Ramblers would not back
down in the second, shooting 52.2 percent from the floor, including 4-of-11
from 3-point distance. With the score tied at 69-69, Thomas knocked down a
jumper with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Ramblers ahead.
Tyler Smithpeters of SIU was then fouled with just one second on the clock and
proceeded to drain two free-throws and send the contest to overtime.
In the extra session, the score was tied at 76-76 when Beane hit a jumper to
put the Salukis up for good with 23 seconds to play as they would score the
final five points of the game to hold on for the victory.
SIU finished with a 25-13 advantage at the free-throw line. The Salukis also
capitalized on the Ramblers' mistakes, converting 14 turnovers into 30 points.
