Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Terell Parks posted 19 points and 11 rebounds,
and the red-hot Western Illinois Leathernecks claimed an 89-74 win over the
Nebraska Omaha Mavericks in Summit League action at Ralston Arena.
Don McAvoy scored 15 points in 19 minutes off the bench, helping the
Leathernecks (14-3, 6-0 Summit) to their 11th straight victory as they
continue their best start since joining the Division I ranks in 1981. Adam
Link and Remy Roberts-Burnett added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Justin Simmons tallied 18 points to pace the Mavericks (5-15, 2-6), who have
dropped five of their last seven contests. Alex Phillips chipped in with 13
points, C.J. Carter scored 12, and John Karhoff finished with 10 points and
seven boards in a losing effort.
UNO jumped out to a nine-point lead less than four minutes into the contest.
However, the Mavericks went on to shoot just 9-of-28 from the floor (.321) in
the first half and trailed, 32-29, at halftime.
The Leathernecks caught fire in the second stanza, as they shot 66.7 percent
from the floor and went 19-of-22 at the foul line over the final 20 minutes to
claim the double-digit victory.
Thanks to that hot shooting in the second half, Western Illinois was able to
win despite forcing only seven turnovers and giving up a 14-8 advantage to UNO
on the offensive glass.
