St. Thomas, USVI (Sports Network) - Ike Azotam posted a double-double with 21
points and 10 rebounds as the Quinnipiac Bobcats outlasted the Ioan Gaels in
overtime, 98-92, in the first round of the Paradise Jam at the UVI Sports and
Fitness Center in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
For the Bobcats (2-1), Jamee Jackson also notched a double-double with 17
points and 10 rebounds. Zaid Heart added 17 points, Dave Johnson
finished with 12 points, and Ousmane Drame chipped in 10 points. Johnson also
dished out a game-high five assists.
Lamont Jones led all scorers with 40 points for the Gaels (1-1). Sean Armand
finished with 18 points, Tre Bowman dropped in 15 points, and Taaj Ridley
pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
In the opening stanza, the Bobcats shot very well, connecting on 52 percent of
their field goal attempts. The Gaels shot only 36.4 percent from the floor,
by they were able go into halftime tied up 32-32 by grabbing eight offensive
rebounds and converting them to seven second chance points.
Down by seven points with little over a minute to play, the Gaels mounted a
rally and Jones drained a three-pointer with four seconds remaining to tie the
game and force overtime.
In the extra session, the Bobcats hit two quick three-pointers to take the
early lead, which they protected by hitting on 7-of-10 free throw attempts to
secure the victory in the extra session.
The Gaels forced 24 turnovers and converted them to 28 points. The teams shot
a combined 50-of-62 from the free-throw line.
