Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Akil Mitchell recorded a double-double
with 14 points and 16 rebounds as the Virginia Cavaliers cruised to an 83-43
victory over the Seattle University Redhawks in a non-conference clash at John
Paul Jones Arena.
Mike Tobey provided a spark off the bench with a game-high 17 points in just 15
minutes of action for Virginia (2-2). Justin Anderson added 11 points, Evan
Nolte scored 10 points, and Paul Jesperson handed out five assists in the
winning effort.
Deshaun Sunderhaus led Seattle (1-1) with nine points. The Redhawks did not get
any help from their reserves, who shot a collective 4-of-23 from the floor in
the contest.
The Cavaliers' stifling defense limited Seattle to 20 percent shooting from the
field including a 1-of-9 mark on three-point attempts in the opening half.
Virginia made 10-of-11 attempts at the charity stripe before the break to earn
a commanding 44-13 halftime lead.
Seattle was unable to cut into the deficit after the intermission as it managed
to make only 29.4 percent of its field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes.
The Cavaliers held a 41-29 advantage in the rebounding battle and assisted 21
of their 28 made field goals en route to the 40-point triumph.
