NCAA Game Summary - Vanderbilt at Arkansas

(Saturday, January 12)

Final Score: Arkansas 56, Vanderbilt 33

Fayetteville, AR (Sports Network) - Marshawn Powell led the way with 17 points as the Arkansas Razorbacks sunk the Vanderbilt Commodores, 56-33, in SEC play at Bud Walton Arena.

For the Razorbacks (10-5, 1-1 SEC), BJ Young added 14 points.

Sheldon Jeter led the Commodores (6-8, 0-2) with eight points. No other Vanderbilt player scored more than five points. The 33 points was the fewest that Vanderbilt has ever scored in SEC play.

Though they only shot 38.5 percent from the field, the Razorbacks held Vandy to a woeful 20 percent shooting performance, as the Razorbacks opened the game on a 15-3 run and took a 21-11 lead into halftime. Both squads were equally shoddy from long distance, as each made just 1-of-7 from 3-point range.

The Commodores improved somewhat after the break, shooting 28 percent from the field in the second half but made only 1-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Razorbacks connected on a respectable 46.2 percent of their field goal tries, but they also struggled from deep, hitting only 2-of-11 of their 3-point tries in the second half. Arkansas pushed their lead to as many as 27 in the half as it cruised to victory.

The Razorbacks dominated in the paint, outscoring the Commodores 32-14. The Razorbacks scored 23 points off of 26 Vandy turnovers.
