(Saturday, February 25th)
Final Score: Loyola Marymount 68, Santa Clara 65
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Drew Viney with 14.6 seconds remaining gave Loyola Marymount some breathing room as the Lions captured a 68-65 win over the Santa Clara Broncos in West Coast Conference action at Gersten Pavilion.
Viney finished the night with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Lions (19-11, 11-5 WCC) as they closed out the regular season with a third win in four tries. Anthony Ireland accounted for a team-best 17 points, adding six assists, five steals and four rebounds, followed by Jarred DuBois with 13 points off the bench.
The Broncos (8-21, 0-16), who closed out the regular season on a 17-game slide, were led by Raymond Cowels with a game-high 22 points, while Denzel Johnson and Evan Roquemore tacked on 12 and 11 points, respectively. Niyi Harrison and Yannick Atanga accounted for 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, as well.
Both teams had a hard time finding the basket in the first half and even though the SCU made a mere 27.0 percent from the floor, the Broncos were able to stay within a point at the break, 29-28.
In the second half LMU struggled again from the field (.318), but the team made up for it by hitting on all but three of 27 tries at the free-throw line.
In a game that experienced seven ties and five lead changes, the Lions claimed the win by outscoring Santa Clara at the charity stripe, 31-13.
