Cancun, MX (Sports Network) - Ryan Pierson scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as Northeastern snapped a six-game slide with a 77-67 win over East Tennessee State in consolation round action of the 2010 Cancun Governor's Cup.
Chaisson Allen chipped in with 18 points and eight boards, while Alex Harris netted 14 points for Northeastern (3-6), which suffered a 71-49 loss to Saint Louis in the opening round of this event on Wednesday. Jonathan Lee finished with 12 points in the victory.
Micah Williams went for a game-high 22 points for East Tennessee State (4-7), which dropped a 64-60 decision to Southern Miss on Wednesday and has now lost three in a row and five of six overall. Adam Sollazzo donated 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in defeat.
Northeastern led wire-to-wire in this one, jumping out to a 19-5 lead after a Pierson dunk 5 1/2 minutes into the contest. It was 29-12 with 11 1/2 minutes to play in the opening half.
East Tennessee State responded with seven straight points to cut its deficit to 29-19 a short time later, but the Huskies built a 47-29 advantage at the break.
Lee drained a three-pointer early in he second half to give Northeastern a comfortable 60-43 lead before the Buccaneers answered with 11 unanswered to get within six, 60-54, near the midway point.
A mini 6-2 run restored the Huskies' double-digit advantage at 66-56 with 6:20 remaining and they wouldn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
