Louisville levels Stetson
Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Jerry Smith scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, as 20th-ranked Louisville demolished Stetson, 80-48, at Freedom Hall.
Samardo Samuels finished with 15 points and seven boards, while Edgar Sosa made all three of his three-point attempts and also netted 15 for Louisville (5-1), which dropped a 76-71 decision at UNLV on Saturday after winning its first four games to start the season.
"It's tough to tell in this type of game whether we played well or didn't play well. I think we played hard. It's tough to tell," Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said.
A.J. Smith had a game-best 18 points, but also committed five turnovers for Stetson (2-5), which has lost five of its last six. Ridge Graham donated 13 points and six rebounds.
"To have a chance to win the game, we had to be under 10 turnovers, we had to keep them under 70 points and we had to shoot 50 percent," Stetson head coach Derek Waugh said. "We didn't hit any of those three, but we weren't way, way off. I thought everyone that came into the game for us contributed, but nobody had a great game and that's what we needed to beat Louisville."
Smith's three-pointer nearly seven minutes into the game got Stetson to within two at 10-8, but Sosa drained a triple to send the Cardinals on a 14-2 run and make it 24-10 with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the half. Louisville took a 37-21 lead into the break.
Sosa buried a trey with nearly nine minutes left in the game to put the Cardinals up 63-38 and they continued to hold a comfortable double-digit advantage in the remaining time.
Louisville has now won five of its six all-time meetings with Stetson...The Cardinals shot 61.7 percent from the field and made 7-of-14 three-point attempts...Stetson finished 35.4 percent from the floor and hit only 7-of-21 from beyond the arc.
