GAME NOTES: The South Alabama Jaguars welcome the Alcorn State Braves to Mobile this evening, as the two teams take part in the South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament.

Alcorn State is desperate for a win, as the team has opened this season with six consecutive defeats, all by 16 or more points. The most recent setback occurred on Sunday, as the club dropped a 79-59 decision to Detroit in a neutral-site affair.

South Alabama carried a modest two-game win streak into last Saturday's clash with Tulsa, but the Jaguars were completely outclassed in that contest as they fell, 84-62, dropping them to 3-2 overall.

The all-time series between Alcorn State and South Alabama is tied at 3-3, thanks to a victory by the Jags over the Braves last season.

Jonathan Boyd leads Alcorn State in scoring with 11.8 ppg, and JaMarkus Holt adds 11.7 ppg and 8.2 rpg. While those two players are solid performers, neither one has the ability to take over a game offensively. Keith Searcy and Shaunvanta Ingram both scored 13 points for Alcorn State against Detroit last time out, and Boyd tallied 12 points in that affair. As for Ian Francis, he provided 11 points and seven rebounds. The Braves finished with only eight assists and turned the ball over 21 times, numbers that will rarely, if ever, lead to victory. They were also outrebounded by a 46-28 margin, including 15-6 on the offensive glass. Alcorn State connected on 38.6 percent of its field goal attempts in the contest, including 5-of-17 from three-point range.

Strong defense has been the key to South Alabama's success this season, as the team is limiting opponents to 66.0 ppg on 37.7 percent shooting from the floor. The Jaguars are netting 71.8 ppg at the offensive end on 43.4 percent field goal efficiency. Tim Williams is the top scorer for USA with 14.2 ppg, but his 37.7 percent field goal efficiency leaves much to be desired. Martino Brock checks in with 11.2 ppg, and Gary Redus provides 10.0 ppg. Williams is pulling down 8.2 rpg, and Brock provides 7.0 rpg. In the lopsided loss to Tulsa last time out, Williams connected on just 7-of-21 field goal attempts en route to 17 points. Redus was much more efficient, knocking down 5-of-6 shots en route to 11 points. A high total of 17 turnovers hurt South Alabama's chances to even remain competitive.

Give the edge to the home team tonight, as South Alabama will take care of business and keep the Braves winless.
