FDU tabs Greg Vetrone as interim men's hoops coach
Teaneck, NJ (Sports Network) - Fairleigh Dickinson named Greg Vetrone as interim head men's basketball coach on Tuesday, replacing longtime coach Tom Green.
It was announced last Friday that Green would not return for a 27th season with the program in 2009-10. Director of Athletics David Langford announced the appointment of Vetrone after candidates were interviewed over the weekend for an interim replacement.
Vetrone joined the Knights' staff for the 2008-09 season as an assistant under Green having served in the same capacity with the program from 1988-1991 where his responsibilities also included overseeing recruiting.
Following his initial stint at FDU, Vetrone was an assistant and recruiting coordinator at the University of California-Irvine (1991-95) and spent the following four years as an assistant with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Vetrone has also held numerous titles in the sport outside of coaching, serving as manager and coordinator of fundraising with the NCAA and NBA for the Coaches versus Cancer program from 2004-06.
Green was the school's and Northeast Conference's all-time leader in wins with a career mark of 407-351. He guided the Knights to four NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of trips to the NIT while leading the program to five regular-season championships and four NEC Tournament crowns.
