NCAA Game Summary - NJIT vs. Monmouth

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - R.J. Rutledge scored 13 points to help lead the Monmouth Hawks to a 55-47 win over the Highlanders of NJIT as part of the Philly Classic at The Palestra.
Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks (1-6) as they snapped a six-game slide to open the 2008-09 campaign, were Alex Nunner and Yaniv Simpson with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Paulius Skema scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for NJIT (0-5), wjile Jheryl Wilson and Brendon Lyn contributed 10 points apiece in yet another losing effort for the squad.
The Highlanders looked strong in the early going with a seven-point run to give them a 10-5 advantage and then closed out the first period on a 7-0 run as well to take a 26-25 edge at the break.
In the second half Monmouth opened up with a pair of three-point baskets and a layup by Nick DelTugo to move ahead and eventually squeeze out the eight-point win on the road.
With the loss NJIT, which went winless a season ago at 0-29, has now dropped 38 in a row dating back to the 2006-07 campaign. The last victory for the program came on February 19, 2007 versus Longwood University in Virginia by a score of 78-74.
The Highlanders have not won back-to-back games since the first two games of the 2006-07 campaign when they defeated Manhattan and Rider.
