Southern Miss names Sadler men's hoops coach

Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Southern Mississippi has named Doc Sadler its new men's basketball coach.

Sadler most recently served as an assistant at Iowa State for the past two seasons after a six-year run as head coach at Nebraska. He has also been a Division I head coach at UTEP.

"We've hired one of the great coaches in America and a perfect match for Southern Miss in Doc Sadler," said Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis. "He is universally respected by his peers and regarded as one of the great coaching minds and recruiters in the country. Importantly, he will be a magnificent fit in our community. Our students, faculty, alumni and fans will love his engaging and genuine personality."

Sadler was fired at Nebraska in March 2012 after compiling a record of 101-89 with the Cornhuskers. Nebraska reached the NIT three times under Sadler, whose last team finished 12-18.

Before joining the Cornhuskers, Sadler spent two seasons at UTEP and guided the Miners to a record of 48-18 with an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005.

"My family and I are very excited to be joining the Southern Miss family. I look forward to being a part of the unbelievable tradition of the Golden Eagle basketball program and building on the great foundation already in place," said Sadler. "I can't wait to meet both our players and fans. We're going to do some special things together."

Sadler was also a head coach on the junior college level at Arkansas-Fort Smith from 1999-2003.

The Golden Eagles needed a replacement for Donnie Tyndall, who left to take the vacancy at Tennessee.
