Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Zeke Upshaw netted 23 points and hit 4- of-7 from 3-point range as the Hofstra Pride took down the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks, 78-70, in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Baltimore Arena.
Dion Nesmith scored 15 points, and Moussa Kone chipped in 11 with nine rebounds for Hofstra (10-22), which advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round to take on top-seeded Delaware. Jamall Robinson and Stephen Nwaukoni each contributed 10 points in the win, with Nwaukoni grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds. The Pride have won two games in a row.
Craig Ponder scored 24 points and hit 9-of-11 from the free-throw line for UNC- Wilmington (9-23). Freddie Jackson netted 16 points, and Dylan Sherwood grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the loss. The Seahawks have dropped four of their last five games.
Hofstra connected on an even 50 percent of its shot attempts in the first half, but went just 3-of-11 from 3-point range, and took a 39-35 lead into the intermission. UNCW hit 40.6 percent of its field goal tries in the frame, and made 5-of-14 from beyond the arc.
The Pride kept up their shooting touch in the second half by drilling 52.2 percent of their shots, and made 13-of-22 from the free-throw line. The Seahawks dipped down to 35.3 percent shooting from the floor, and made just 3- of-10 from deep. Hofstra doubled its score in the period and was able to cruise to the eight-point victory.
The Pride had the edge in rebounding, 44-29, and outscored UNCW in points in the paint, 40-30. The Seahawks won the battle in points off turnovers, 20-12.
