Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Thornton and Brandon Britt each tallied 19 points to lead the third-seeded William & Mary Tribe over the sixth-seeded College of Charleston Cougars, 70-59, in a quarterfinal round showdown in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Baltimore Arena.
Terry Tarpey chipped in nine points with a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots for William & Mary (19-11), which will advance to the CAA semifinal round to face the second-seeded Towson Tigers Sunday.
Willis Hall recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds for Charleston (14-18), while Anthony Thomas chipped in 14 points and Anthony Stitt notched 11 in the loss.
Charleston shot 48.4 percent from the floor in the first half, and netted 6- of-13 from 3-point distance to take a 40-28 lead into the intermission. William & Mary hit just 36.4 percent of its field goal tries in the frame, and went 3-of-8 from 3-point range.
The tides turned in the second half, as the Tribe netted 56 percent of their shot attempts and buried 11-of-16 from the free-throw line to battle back from the 12-point halftime deficit. The Cougars hit 25.8 percent of their shots in the period, and missed all 10 of their 3-point tries as William & Mary outscored Charleston, 42-19, in the half to earn the victory.
The Tribe outscored the Cougars from the free-throw line, 20-7, and had a 15-8 edge in bench points.
